As a southerner permanently (I hope) relocated to Yorkshire, your opening para made me smile. I've been here five and a half years now and sometimes a short 'a' slips out. It doesn't help that my favourite local pub is called the Bath, and I spend a lot of time talking to the class, sometimes about social class, at which point I get very self conscious... I've noticed though that a lot of my bona fide northern colleagues are more nesh than me.
I were brought up to believe 'mitherin' were a Manchester expression and 'nowt' were lancastrian but i'll go to the foot of our stairs if i'm proven wrong.
There's nowt so queer as folk after all.
I'm disappointed you didn't write the whole post in "Northern".
@WA
DG said t'weather were "nithering". "Mithering" were what 'e were doin' abaht it.
Ey-up, no need to get mardy.
