The roundabout on Forest Way also featured in a relatively recent John Lewis Christmas ad.
The fame! |
Well I've never heard of Poverest before, I never even considered that area had its own name (I'd have called it Orpington) so I guess the tourist board has worked on me. Now I do want to go to Poverest.

Was that a Banksy I spied behind the Triumph Spitfire?

Despite this write-up, you could probably find other suburbs which are even poverer.

"Today two churches are to be found at this prime location, one CofE and one Baptist"
I believe the unillustrated church with services at 10.30am to be Lutheran rather than CofE. dg writes: fixed thanks. |
Worked at the bottom of that road for years. I think we forgot to take the sign off ff the factory when we moved : it's some sort of marketing organisation now now.
Site of countless lunchtime walks up the hill and back down. Uninspiring spot... |
I can imagine this with a voice-over by Peter Sellers, in the style of Bal-Ham Gateway to the South, one of Muir and Norden's finest sketches.

The area also has its own fairground ride, the R3 bus as it winds it way around the Northern flank.
A must do, but not if you tend to suffer from car sickness. dg writes: indeed. |

Hidden London comes up with a warning for me too - most annoying!
Never heard of Poverest, but was in Orpington on Wednesday and noted kids in school uniform - assumed they were Yr 7s on a pre-start day, but maybe not!! Term starting in August - what a swizz!! |
I think it would be better if Fordcroft aligned its open day to the slew of open days on offer in September (see following post), to get a wider publicity reach.
I'm tempted for next July but already tend to have a lot on that month. |
Bromley schools (of which Poverest and Orpington area schools are part) now have two weeks at 1/2 term in October, instead of the more usual one, so they likely start back a week earlier at the beginning of Sept to make up for it, and on occasions this may stray into August a bit. I for one am right with Bromley for being slightly different than the ENTIRE rest of the country for their school holiday dates.. if only some of the other councils would adopt a bit of variation then arranging holidays etc might be a bit easier for everyone!
