As it goes, the river is really shallow just there because there's a load of concrete shoring up the bridge, which makes the traditional summer sport of jumping off the bridge even less advisable. Did you know that as. originally built the bridge had no bolts in it at all but was held together with shims like wooden bridge of the time? It's only the relatively poor quality of 18th century iron that made repairs necessary in the '60s.

I spent a very enjoyable three nights in Ironbridge a few years ago, I rented a very beautiful flat on the first floor of the building directly adjacent to the bridge, it is owned by "The Landmark Trust" and has the most stunning view of the bridge through the windows, I managed to visit all of the local museums and was very very impressed with the whole experience and would recomend it to anyone.

Great post, Ironbridge is a nice place to spend a day.

Tried to follow your twitter link, but my companies firewall has blocked it because of sexual content.

I want to know what it is!

Fantastic post, I remember that feeling of wow when I first saw the Iron bridge, you described it perfectly. It's an amazing structure and Ironbridge itself a beautiful place that doesn't deserve Telford as a neighbour .

Nor does it deserve those mammoth cooling towers just around the river bend as neighbors.

Another fine post DG and a most interesting destination. I hope you availed of the excellent Wrexham & Shropshire service from Marylebone to get you there. They do the best food of all the railway operators - dunno how that squares with your dietary regime though...

D'oh - if only I twittered I'd have seen the answers for myself before posting. Glad you enjoyed the breakfast bap - they really are very fine.

Are you planning to relive all my school trips? First Fishbourne, now Ironbridge...
