There is also a little gem of a museum in Abington Park, though not open until March. Agree utterly with your comments on bus station!

Don't forget the ...

I didn't - that's tomorrow.

I've always had a soft spot for Northampton because it's where you get off the river Nene with its big, slow but violent locks, and back onto the canal and lovely little narrow locks (until you get back onto the Grand Union main line). Well, other people comment about tube arcana...

Well sold, DG, I hadn't heard of Greyfriars before. Might make a snap visit this afternoon, for all it's proximity. Well, they do say Northamptonshire is "North Londonshire".. *thud*

Erm, I thought you'd missed something too. If you had taken your bike a quick 20 or so mile sprint would have rewarded you with an equally impressive example, then a 20 metre stroll to the Star.

it's also the largest town in the UK *without* a Starbucks. You may see this as either a good or bad thing ...

I think you are a bit harsh on some of the architecture. Greyfriars is pretty ugly, but is highly functional. And the Carlsberg brewery was awarded the Financial Times Industrial Architecture Award in 1975. The brewery was designed by the Danish architect Knud Munk in the form of a Danish longship.

Actually I rather liked the Carlsberg Brewery - it's most unusual. But it was belching, and it was definitely smelly.

Well, yes. It can smell, but (as residents of any brewery town well tell you) you quickly get used to it.

Looking forward to tomorrow's post. There are some really strange things in Northampton to visit.

Our son was at univsersity in Northampton, so I have some wonderful memories of the place, including a trip to the hospital when he broke his nose 2 days after he got there. Trying out for the uni football team, with whom he later played twice in matches at Sixfields stadium in the local league finals. His graduation ceremony was held at the Derngate theatre, with photos etc in the Guildhall, both of which are very impressive. One of the honorary degrees awarded at the ceremony was to Benjamin Zephaniah whose acceptance speech was very entertaining!

Greg., why does every single post you make here and elsewhere (e.g. London Reconnections) have to be negative and/or complaining in some way? It's getting rather tiresome to read, not least because it's unavoidable. Seriously, if you have nothing positive, pleasant or valuable to add, perhaps it would be better if you didn't bother.

As a one time student of what was University College Northampton, I've spent countless hours at that bus station with my bags of shopping from the Sainsbury's in the shopping centre waiting ages for the No 25 back to the Campus during my first year.

Not been back there in a while so thanks for the refresher!
