If the blue hoop idea is ever done here in the Netherlands, they will only need one to cover the whole country. ;-)

Might have misread it, but you say "just as well, because the Paternoster Square pillar is only 23 metres tall, with the extra altitude provided by the height differential between Covent Garden and the Thames"

Paternoster Sq isn't in Covent Garden - do you mean 'between St Paul's and the Thames'?

Paternoster Square, Covent Garden?

I had a look at the Plunge site and I couldn't see why these three site were selected anywhere. Why not Nelson's Column or the Monument? Unless they asked to put their blue bands on them and were refused permission.

I wonder if a 28m rise would exceed the total volume of water available, even if all the ice fields thawed?

(I'm NOT a climate change sceptic, though.)

"If all of the Antarctic ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet)": http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/geophysics/question473.htm

However, as that article says, the consensus estimate is for 4-6m by 3000.

Oops, that article doesn't say that. Must have been Wikipedia or something else I ran across.

For that matter: Cleopatra's Needle, St. George's Circus?

Didn't they use to run sheep through Paternoster Square in ye olden days? I'm sure I remember seeing a statue to that effect at one end at some point!
But yes, those barriers do completely spoil a popular square.

Thank you for yet more reminders that my writing is riddled with inaccuracies and dodgy links. No, really, thanks.

I shall return to this topic shortly...

Still, far more accurate in argument than BP...

BP's installation is so meaningless that all it really needs is an Arts Council grant and they could pass that off as an artistic statement as well. Ponder on the deep meaninglessness of generosity as a multibillion oil company, responsible for massive pollution, voluntarily donates 11p to "carbon offsetting" every time you click a button...
