"not allowed to get off and walk the intermediate gap"
That's a big clue as to what happens next, but doesn't the 375 fill that gap? Might have been quicker than the long detour into Romford, even if it does add another bus to the total.
Don,t wish to appear pedantic but shouldn't 247 heading be Barkingside (or Fulwell Cross) not Woodford Green?

Thanks for this, DG. I'm currently about three quarters of the way around the London Loop and have enjoyed reading this circumambulation of London by bus which provides a complementary perspective on the suburbanscape and its inhabitants.
I rode the 247 in the opposite direction recently and was quite surprised how busy it was and the distances some of my fellow travellers covered. I do enjoy the view across the fields on Whalebone Lane / Romford Rd. Now is the next bus the low frequency 347 or something else?
"i'm now having to endure Top-Gear-level chatter from the three automotive addicts, who are discussing the ideal turquoise shade of their dream car and what kind of tyres it'd have."

Surely that's what i-pods were invented for?
@PC
patience! If DG is to get back near the boundary there may be one, or maybe even two, higher-numbered routes before we get to the 347. The clue is what DG said at Collier Row.

Or he could cut to the chase and get back to Bluewater in just two buses from Romford.
You should do an N8 journey, thats a creepy expedition at 3am! Im 20, and am driving buses for the year until uni and have had a few night explores with colleagues just to see what would happen! Weird, I know!
