To get the ladies coming back what you need is, as I'm sure Debster will tell you, kittens.

I assume all this talk about "ladies" is ironic?

What you missed: I'm reading your blog as an RSS feed on a mobile device.

probably many of the "world" readers used to live here (London) but have now left, and your blog is a good way to keep in touch

I think you've drawn the wrong conclusion in the final section. I think your initial readership, back when this blog was barely known, was mostly fellow bloggers. As you've become more and more popular, non-bloggers start to discover you. It's not the death of blogging, simply a correction to better reflect reality.

Even though I'm a US reader I am probably more interested in Mile End than most other places you report about as I spent much of my youth visiting my Nan who lived there (and is buried in Tower Hamlets Cemetery). And speaking for this female...please, no kittens.

usually read daily, in typical style missed yesterday! So you can add one more female 30 something Londoner to your figures.

Less kittens, more zombies please.

I wonder if this is the first time we've seen an exclamation mark on here..

As one of your 88 foreign readers I would agree that most of us are probably ex-Londoners reading it as a way to keep in touch with home. I'm sure I'm not alone in spending more time reading blogs and message boards of things I'm interested in than actually e-mailing friends or talking to my family.

*Waves at the rest of the select few who have been reading since the beginning*

It's depressing in a way to see how quickly this survey has come round - 2 years just whizzes by nowadays. Probably a symptom of firmly entering middle age (ish) territory!

What about some zombie kittens? Should appeal to DG's discerning readership...

Always read DG daily. I live in Europe, and left England back in 1965. I read DG to find interesting things to do no trips to the UK.

Seconding the hope for ironic 'ladies', DG. I am raising the second generation of young women readers for you and neither of us is titled...

I find it hard to ascertain the gender of some commentators (other than those who purr for kittens).

I've had several surprises recently when people have used third person singular personal pronouns when referring to themselves.

I suspect that the female readers amongst us are not of an overly cute girly demographic.

@Blue Witch, in my experience a lot of women choose neutral user names, particularly on forums, to avoid harrassment and misogynistic abuse. I am also not a girly girl but there are places and times where I don't want to be defined by my gender.

Just a hunch, but I suspect my 18% of female readers leave more than 18% of my comments. Thanks.

Well, it's because we care.....

For the record, I usually read diamondgeezer on an RSS reader... on my mobile ;-)

(And I wasn't able to click on the options yesterday, so I am another person lost to your swift-moving statistical survey.)

It's not just a hunch; I suppose I do much in a 'male' world. I'm a 53.75 year old 'lady'...

Probably way too late to comment on this but just wondering if anyone has dared question DG on his actual blog name? While Diamond is an apt descriptor for the quality of writing he consistently puts out and the breadth of topics and sheer interestingness that makes this blog a first read every day, I think Geezer now portrays the wrong image - ever thought of upgrading your name DG?

From a recent convert (40-something male, London, reads mostly on a mobile device)

sorry, forgot to add that my point is that diamond geezer to a new user stumbling across the name would suggest a football blog or maybe a cabbie, rather than the rather more sophisticated offering we receive daily, so may be misleading

Name upgrade - how about Diamond Gentleman :)

#Nameless commenter above: I refer you to http://www.londonslang.com/db/d/

Who reckons nameless commentator works for a rebranding agency? ;)

@Blue Witch, I assure you that despite my comment about kittens I am a man. I know what you mean about being suprised when you find out on here that someone you thought was male turns out to be female or vice versa. For some reason I got the idea that CornishCockney was male until in a comment she said something about her husband. It just goes to show that on an anonymous forum we get preconceived ideas that can turn out to be completely wrong. I have never met DG but through reading his blog I form a picture of him in my head of him being avarage height and quite slim from all the walking he does. I could be totally wrong and he could be 5 foot nothing and as round as a beach ball for all I know.

anyway, why assume that anyone who likes kittens has to be female?

For some reason, I had not noticed that DG was as an Oxford graduate. Cambridge is miles better, of course. :)

@LowerCaseLetterS: Like this?

I only read every day if I've got time to keep up with blogs, which I haven't had this week. So I'm another female who wasn't recorded in your poll.

Given that your poll was only open for voting for a day, results will under represent those who visit less frequently. If occasional visitors visit, say, every other day then your poll will have only caught half of them. Obviously of little interest when looking at year on year trends, but it rather pushes up the total number of readers.

Sorry to be late for your survey, but let me skew your stats a bit more.

Male
60+ (and only as old as the one I'm feeling).
I've been reading you in my browser (Firefox) since 2003 or '04, when I started blogging. And I haven't finished yet.

And I'm really glad you haven't.
