"custard-coloured lowloader" - that could be a description from a Betjeman poem. Wonderful.
Ooh, this is a rarity - DG visiting a place *after* me! I visited Harwich and Felixstowe a month or so back, and was also pleasantly surprised by the former - though I confess I didn't pack quite quite as much in as our intrepid correspondent. The trip across the harbour was good fun, even with the waves kicked up by the wind blowing against the running tide. The town and railway station on the other side are also a good walk away once you have scrambled up the shingle from the boat The ferry service is apparently under threat however, so use it whilst you still can.
Yes, I too am looking forward to the Felixstowe part. The ferry service has fluctuated over the years, but the threat may be increasing. Until 1951 Felixstowe (Pier)station was right next to the ferry terminal.

It's good to know about Harwich's range of museums. I was quite surprised on my recent brief first visit there to find a quaint very small town; the name had previously conjured up in my head something like Southampton or Liverpool.
@Robert Johnson - we've got a ferry like that too. Bearing in mind the alternative round trip let's hope it restarts.
DG - why does your slide show run in the opposite direction to your blog narrative? Just interested. Enjoyed it anyway.

Harwich will be remembered by many Army and RAF servicemen as the midnight departure port for the ferry to The Hook of Holland and onward trains to BAOR until 1960, when air trooping replaced it.
"Harwich for the continent, Frinton for the incontinent," as the saying goes.
Great stuff. I've been wanting to go for ages. Sounds like you haven't yet beaten me to the Felixstowe Ferry. I better get a move on.
Careful here. The expression "the Felixstowe Ferry" could mean about 3 different things. There's the ferry between Felixstowe Dock and Harwich, or there's the ferry between Felixstowe Ferry (the place) and Bawdsey. Thirdly there's a car ferry between Felixstowe and Zeebrugge. None of these is terribly close to Felixstowe town station, of course.
Good point Malcolm, it's the ferry between Felixstowe and Harwich that I'd most like to sample. I've already been to Zeebrugge from Felistowe (as you'd expect much like any other car ferry).
