And there I was yesterday thinking you'd be doing Nantwich in the afternoon.
I had Knutsford on my DG bingo card.
I guessed Wilmslow.
Nantwich.
Me too.
Looks nice, good to know! More of a 'must see' than Crewe, in my eyes at any rate.
Stafford looks worth a visit, thanks.
Good to see that the county of Staffordshire is still hanging in there, headquartered in its namesake town, in spite of many losses of territory (and occasional regains) over the years.
I half thought you might have gone to Acton Bridge for the obvious comparison with it's West London counterpart but admittedly you would have struggled to find much to write about in what is not much more than a small village.
I use your reports to inspire and inform my future wanders. When I looked at the GB Rail Sale I found no attractively discounted tickets to anywhere I'd not visited or wanted to revisit - but Stafford is now firmly on my list. Thanks.
Looks like you hit the jackpot weather-wise too!
I spent the first 18 years of my life in Stafford and couldn’t wait to move to a city!

I’m glad you enjoyed it, but I think the town centre has been ruined by out of town retail parks - the north end of the high street in particular has dozens of empty shells where there were once department stores and bookshops.

Car is king here - when I go to visit my mum I get irritated within minutes as it takes so long for the pedestrian lights outside the station to change, not improved by the pavement parking and fast traffic.
Hey Mike - me too. 18 years old and I was out of there (to london via French alps). The market used to be amazing and should haepisodeve been listed before they built the stupid shopping centre on its place. I was filmed in that market for Songs of Praise in the 1980’s, buying rabbit food. I never did find the programme on you tube.
Like Darlington, Stafford is much more worth a visit than the view from its railway station would suggest. I've been considering a trip for some time, and this puts the tin lid on it.
I echo your point about the astounding cheapness of the Rail Sale tickets. I went to Stratford upon Avon and Warwick with them last month and, like you, the most expensive individual ticket was the one between the two places. But the limitations on availability meant I wasn’t able to arrange any other jaunts that way.
