A remarkable feature of these waterways is that they are, mostly, still navigable. No culverting paved over for supermarket car-parks; no mid-stream pillars supporting trunk roads. This is a benefit of under-development and neglect. I see that the builders are being encouraged to use them for the bulk delivery of materials, so expect to hear the jolly banter of bargee's families and their colourfully decorated narrowboats chugging up from the Thames :D In some parts of the country they give you free access and "parking" to facilities if you come by boat, but not this time I suspect. |
