There used to be more buses along Sheen Lane, even night buses. But the wait for trains at the level crossing is often a long time. Melbourne is replacing crossings with bridges, but London prefers footbridges as pedestrians are seen as most important.
This is also one of the most dangerous level crossings on the network, and I imagine TfL would not wish to add to the levels of congestion or air pollution.
I'm sure TfL, Network Rail and the Borough of Richmond would love to get rid of the level crossings, but I doubt a viaduct would be acceptable. So a trench (covered would be ideal) would seem the way forward. the cost would be massive and require shutting the line for an extended period
I briefly lived round there so wondered why I hadn't heard of it!
Alas I moved away the year before it was introduced!
I live right by the level crossing and this bus line has always been a kind of mystery to me. I still intend to use it someday just to make a point of using it! Thanks for all the info. I have to say though that the walk to any of the two busier roads where plenty of buses run is quick and easy and I’m glad there’s no more large vehicles to get trapped at the crossing, it’s awful enough as it is (and I don’t even drive).
Before the 969 the 485 used to go up Sheen Lane in one of its many versions. My memory is that the shelter first appeared for that, though I have yet to find photographic evidence!
The level crossing here is a joke. The barriers are down far more than they're up and it's quicker to cross via the station bridge.
One morning in 2019 I waited 23 minutes at this level crossing and 7 trains passed before the barriers rose. I was transporting large items in a van
Plenty of people walked across Richmond Park today.
