It's more likely a certainty than a risk that the remain vote will be split (Bootle 1990 when three Liberal type parties ran), very good chance the Brexit Party will be in the next general election - which might be sooner as a competent Tory leader might well be confident of eviscerating a Corbyn led Labour party (I mean being less popular than May is one hell of an achievement).

I'm very sad to say it, but I think the domino was tipped a while ago, and nothing can now stop brexit or avoid the resulting national decline.
Still Anon: Where do you see a potentially *competent* Tory leader in that bunch? The reason May hangs on is that there isn't anyone competent to replace her. Same for Corbyn, really. There are a couple of competent Lab members (Cooper, or potentially Khan), but they're keeping the hell away from leadership contests
Still Anon, Chz:
Whoever and however competent, I don't think they will risk an election. The polls show the Tories 8 points behind for Westminster and even May only called an election when she thought she had a big lead. Some outliers right now would even give Labour an outright majority with 28%!
One should remember that groups who are able to, and tend to, care more on their own interests, usually unite better than the others. IMHO this is why pro-Beijing parties in Hong Kong, the Republicans in the US, and to a lesser extent, the Tories and Faragists, prevail.
People voted for Brexit. The vote should have been respected and honoured. We could then have worked together to get the best possible deal for all parties. We're not leaving Europe; just rejecting its bureaucrats. All this prevaricating has done is made it certain that Leave will eventually hold massive celebrations and Farage may get another chance to seize power; god forbid.
Given that around 1/3 of Tory MP's were against May in the confidence vote, and that ideological purity has overtaken party loyalty, there is the potential for a Brexit Party (which'll win in Labour leave areas)/Tory coalition after a snap general election.

As to a competent Tory leader, well we do have president Trump and some bloke who plays the president of Ukraine on a TV show is now the actual president of Ukraine, so it could be Boris instead of someone competent.
I voted to leave. From the minute the referendum result was announced, the remainers have put a great effort into trying to make Brexit as hard as possible and really screw things up in the hope of getting a second referendum.

All this has done for me is to turn me against various parties / people (who I would never support again) and make me determined to support Brexit come what may.
