And you thought it was a long way to the chemist ... that sounds great, I will have to go and look it up next time I am in the area. Thanks DG. |
Proxima Centauri aside, it's easier to explore on a daytrip than Sweden's scale model: http://www.astro.su.se/swesolsys...t/ stations.html |
Few more pleasant places in Kent than Otford recreation ground on a summer's evening. Shame you missed the ruined palace. |
Must go to Otford one day. |
Henry - in all fairness theirs does go out a long way beyond Pluto. |
Just to be pedantic, there's something very similar in Zurich, on a mountain walk which has occasional scale models situated along the path that gives an indication of scale. Which was nice, but this looks better. |
And there's one in Finland in and around the capital: http://www.ursa.fi/ursa/aurinkok...kuntamalli/eng/ |
I know of at least 5 more. Munichen Germany Ithaca NY USA Zurich Switzerland Cleveland Ohio USA Zagreb Croatia |
Just a bit further than a trip down the road to the chemist then. |
And there is one in Val Gardena, in the Dolomites, Italy, along an old railway track. |
That is just wonderful. I shall have to visit. |
Fascinating - I wonder if I'll ever get to visit? Anyway, it does put the size of the solar system and the universe into perspective when you look at these models. It's just a shame the couple you mentioned could not have waited until you'd left before commencing their 'acts of passion'. It reminds me of a day when I was happily taking pictures of the buildings in Canary Wharf, when the view was spoilt by a couple who started hugging and kissing in front of the fountain in Cabot Square. I therefore know how frustrating it must have been for you. |
I have visited many times thats because my England home is 5 minutes away in Kemsing. Alas now about as far away from otford as indeed the sun, By the way that looks like my son in the green t-shirt...not joking.. |
Actually the chemist is between Earth & Saturn!! So not too far. And there's a map on the green showing where the Archbishop's Palace is, and a board with information about the history of the Palace beside the path on the Palace Field. Guess where I live! You could have popped in |
Hi Christine! We found the map on the green, but only after we'd walked past the un-signed church into the un-signed churchyard up an un-signed path, with no indication whatsoever that walking a bit further might be worthwhile. And we had things to do, places to be, so we didn't have time to go back. Drat. |
I'm afraid the feeling seems to be that anybody who doesn't know where these things are should probably pop into a pub or tea shop and ask! Although if you're at the pond the church is rather difficult to miss. There shoud be a sign for the church but it was removed when the new Church Centre was built and it hasn't been replaced yet. Might have to suggest that, thanks for the reminder |
Wasn't the model village in Finsbury Park also called Otford? http://www.flickr.com/photos/vvo...ody/2453839047/ |
I've been there. Oddly we found Pluto out in its distant field but never found the rest! |
What a brilliant project. I see the pubs in Otford are the Crown and the Bull. Shame there's no Star. |
Also The Woodman and The Horns, a 4 pub/4 church village Otford, got to keep things even! |
