Of course, if you are in one of those jobs with more time than action, you could always try blogging, that can take up huge chunks of time. MyFace. Any social networking site that lets you find others with as little to do. It's what IT is there for.

i am so bored at work you have no idea. we have no phones, no internet, no email - well, the place is going down the pan. so i listen to music and play solitaire or read a book. there really is nothing else to do, which is why i am job-hunting.

oh the fact that my colleague and i haven't been paid for 6 months + other expenses is a bit of a pain in the butt.

I think you might upset workers in some of those groups you think have nothing else to do but the 'obvious' - there is a lot more to being a fireman or running a boutique than meets the eye...

I honestly don't believe that there is a job int he world where I'd have nothing to do. Because I'd *find* something constuctive to do related to whatever I was being paid to do. But I'm like that - I give as well as expect Value.

And, of course,
...Reserve Goalkeepers (I do hope my team-mate doesn't get injured in today's game...but, of course, if he does, I'll be happy to take over)

But DG there are some jobs that involve both elements. I get the best (and the worst) of both. Can you think what they are???

A couple of years ago I was in a similar position to Zed; our firm was winding up our remote office with just two of us doing virtually nothing except trawl the internet and listen to the radio.

This might sound fun, but believe me, those last 5 months were the most soul destroying ever.

Now I'm in a job where I'm busy nearly all the time (I'm on a break at the moment), and it's great.

The big question for me would be "can you do something else while you wait for something to happen"? If you can blog or read a book it seems to me a 'job-less' job might be pretty good. It's having to look busy when there's nothing to do that I don't think I could stand...

At the beginning of this year I was working for a Production Company who were very quiet but waiting for some commissions to come in and they wanted to keep their current staff so we were basically being paid our salary to do nothing. This went on for 3 months until they realised that there really was no more work coming in. It was hell. I was depressed, bored, ansy and just generally cranky. It is actually really hard to occupy yourself and look busy when there is NOTHING to do.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. 9 hours a day of nothing leads to complete insanity.

Ah - very apt timing...

Oh the wonders of turning up for a booked work shift, only to find that those higher up than you have cocked up the rota.

I could think of better ways to waste my time than commuting back and forth for not a lot (nothing, actually)

I work for the railway... faulting standby for when the signals break and all of you busy folk get held up going to work (hah!)

They're usually boring days but the shift is only three a week so it's better than working for a living.

Receptionist in a rural Social Security office (which have almost all gone now) on a wet Tuesday afternoon is pretty dull

Receptionists always seem to have tons of'down' time but rarely do anything about it. I always wonder if I could be doing another job at the same time and getting double pay!

I am a 'temp' and I only get paid for hours I'm worked. If the work runs out,(i.e. you've worked too well) you have to go home, and then you don't get paid. Nice to have an unexpected afternoon off though.

Firemen (who, unlike their other 999 counterparts, play a lot of volleyball)

Snigger...
