Ken loach is from Nuneaton too. http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/how-i-daniel-blake-inspired-12088571
Is the topiary George Eliot at the station no longer there?

Nuneaton may be nondescript but there are clearly some good people there. When I was boating through a few years ago, my friend dropped their brand new iPhone on the towpath - by the time he noticed it was missing, it had been handed in to the police. And, again as we passed through, a man gave us some lovely new potatoes from his allotment. So three cheers for Nuneaton.
I would say Grayson's house would be this one [Streetview 2009] which has disguised itself with an extension recently [Streetview 2017].

dg writes: I agree (and that explains why I couldn't find it, thanks!).
It seems the Nuneaton Co-operative Society merged with others to form the Heart of England Co-operative Society, which still exists.
Logistics and distribution is quite a good way for a place to make a living these days, so perhaps not so much of a fall back as a stepping up.

Though once living near there, I had never known about the Eliot or Grayson connection, thanks for the info.

I can confirm from my experience that Nuneaton seems to have a good proportion of decent friendly inhabitants.
George Eliot has a more local connection to us too DG, as no doubt you are aware. S/he used to live in Rickmansworth - a house called "The Elms" at 9 High Street, which is now part of St Joan of Arc secondary school. I was head boy there in 1989 and the school has always been very proud of its literary connection.
The Heart of England Co-Op (one of several independent Co-Ops in the Midlands and East Anglia) closed all its department stores 18 months ago to concentrate on its food and funeral care businesses, but the building in Nuneaton still houses its head office.
You must have said some ulterior motive for going to Nuneaton, DG, interesting though it sounds. No?
"Nuneaton Town Centre is monitored by CCTV for your safety and security"

The fact that they actually feel the need to point this out in a large sign (rather than just keep quiet like most towns)does not reassure me ;)
I'm sure readers will be interested to hear that Nuneaton's original dialling code was 0682 (6 for N, 8 for U), before transferring to 0203 in 1982, 01203 in 1995 and 024 on 22 April 2000.
It would feel very remiss of me to read this post and not say 'shut that door'.
The pub infestation was a corker given Lazza's obsession with muck.
The train takes 1hour and is direct to euston with just one stop. Not bad.
Larry Grayson's old house seems to have been heavily rebuilt with another property squuezed in next door - at 85 Hinckley Road looking on Google Earth
