Meanwhile...
When I was young a trip up town to see the Christmas lights was a real treat, but in those days the lights really did look festive and like proper Christmas lights should look, these days its half adverts or something that seems to lack any imagination.
Will Bert be pleased that this is not a post about buses in East London?
... sorry too distressed re Trump. Even sparkly lights cannot inspire or cheer me.
I don't think the lights are ever worth making a special trip for, however if I'm in Central London for other reasons I might catch the 73 instead of the Victoria Line, or the 13/139 instead of the Jubilee Line.

Of course we won't be able to take a bus trip down Oxford Street to see the lights for many more Christmases.
Hahaha! Trust DG to go with something totally different today!

@fishislandskin I agree. Of late the lights have been dismal but, from the pictures, this years actually look quite festive!
@Cornish Cockney - on the contrary, "The Best" is something of a you-know-who catchphrase...
Londonist also doesn't seem to know how to spell the name of the street in which Hamley's is located (clue: no "'s" )

And for seeing Christmas lights you need large windows on the top deck - so neither the 10 nor the RV1 are ideal, as the former has tiny windows and the latter has no top deck windows at all (the "top deck" is full of hydrogen cylinders)
Well done DG I'm tempted to give it a try myself. Nothing like a cheap treat to warm the cockles....
The number 10 bus is no good now as it is a Boris bus, I hope dg did not suffer too much on its cramped top deck with small windows and no rear view window.
I would never have thought the RV1 as a Christmas Lights route!
In the olden days before LED the lights were worth seeing, lots of coloured incandescent light bulbs.
It started going downhill from 1978 the year they decided to use laser lights in Oxford Street which was very disappointing.
Since then LED's have come to the fore and I no longer bother to make a trip to see the Christmas lights.
On the news this week there was an item about permanent decorative lighting for all of London's bridges, that when it come to fruition may be worth seeing.
Your continual tirades against Londonist on twitter are embarrassing. Surely better to take the moral high ground?
Bonus of RV1 being diverted over London Bridge is that the passenger's get the profile view of Tower Bridge floodlit at night
@Timbo, you mean it's called Regent Treet?
@Barry

It was Londonist's use of the genitive to which I was alluding - not the "Melt in your mouth, not in your hand" confectionery.

(Now apparently called Minstrels)
@timbo - Treets were more akin to the modern M&Ms than Minstrels In my eyes.
This use of The 10 Best is so annoying. It turns talking of something you like and want to share into a competitive rant - by definition if my favourite South London sandwich bar is not in the list, it's not as good as yours.
Bah, humbug!
As if the now almost constant stream of Christmas ads wasn't enough.
I don't think that DG launches "tirades" about londonist. He only reports on what he finds there, and what he thinks of it.

There is of course a subtext, that londonist is a living for the people involved, whereas DG chooses to spend his own money on hosting his blog, and gives all his time writing it for free. And long may he continue.

But of course there is room in the big wide internet for all kinds of content, provided in all sorts of ways. It is good to know what you are getting, though.
Although Londonist is the source of ire here, it could easily be the Evening Standard or many other sites. It's like the author just sits at their desk, hits the keyboard and hopes for the best

I do occasional list style post on my site. I avoid the word "best" because it is so subjective. But I do try to make mine based on reality
Is any article which claims to list X of the best a form of Betteridge's law, and therefore means that they're not the best?
Which is the best out of all of the "Best of London" lists?
Noteworthy that all the DG suggested routes between Marble Arch and Aldwych aren't operated by NB4Ls.

Anyway Christmas lights - bah humbug! Just get us through to March 2017 without freezing to death or being obliterated by Trump's itchy finger on the nuclear button.
@PC
Those are the only four routes between Selfridges and Aldwych (two of them don't quite each marble Arch)
