TfL seem unable to make their mind up about whether the outer branches will initially say TfL Rail or not. They've definitely said both. Logistically I believe they are served by the same set of trains (you can see TfL Rail west diagrams in the east and vice versa) so having 2 brands on one train may be difficult.
A friend, who’s on the supervisory board for the project, tells me that the position is still that the line will open “before the end of June”. She’s not aware of any problems which would push it back beyond then, but thinks that a March opening is highly unlikely. So that’s one thing less for the signage chaps to worry about…
Further to my earlier Internal Memo, I am sending this email urgently because I realise I may have misled you on one point.

The original idea was to encourage Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan passengers to change at Barbican rather than Farringdon in order to to reduce congestion at Farringdon. However, with 'value engineering' changes at Barbican I am not sure that this is still the case. Worse still it may still be the case except for those with mobility issues. This is going to be very hard to display in a simple manner on the car diagrams.

We at the Purple Line we remain positive and reflect on the fact that this is nothing compared to how it will be impossible to meaningfully devise a map for pedestrians in the City of London showing the nearest convenient Underground entrance for their journey once the Bank Station Upgrade is fully completed. Still at least that won't be TfL's problem and, if it were, we could solve it by simply invoking our tactic of not publishing anything at all.
Last I heard, once the Abbey Wood to Paddington section opens, the existing TfL Rail sections will be rebranded as Elizabeth Line though the situation may have changed since then. This does pose additional signage challenges at Liverpool St and Paddington especially. Also the Northern Line car diagrams will definitely show an interchange at Moorgate in addition the obvious one at TCR.

I'm surprised the DLR hasn't indicated an interchange at West India Quay for the Elizabeth Line as it's the nearest station to Canary Wharf EL.
“Head of Purple” fnaar fnaar!
How very "2012"/"W1A".

Must get onto the BBC about a follow up series, maybe call it 55 Broadway.
I appreciated that the Jubilee Line diagram showed a connection for 'Dangleway' at North Greenwich.

Perhaps we should crowdfund you to install such stickers IRL.
The 'Colour' for the Platinum Jubilee also seems to be purple, so 'Head of Purple' must be quite a common job title now.

I wonder if it will make its way on to the insurers' official list of occupations?
Dear Head of Purple
You suppress the fact that many of the internal signs already fitted are incorrect and require adjusting or replacing. How very TfL in this "on time, on budget" project.
Kind regards

Temp signs at Liverpool Street lower level have appeared directing passengers upstairs to the Elizabeth Line to Shenfield via Stratford. So looks like TfL Rail brand is go when it opens.
Don’t think we didn’t notice the cheeky “Dangleway” reference there! Coz we did, very good…

Perceptive observation from Blue Witch.

Maybe we we could call it the Jubilee line instead. Oh no, bad idea - or rather good idea but already done. So how about Platinum line? Or maybe Purple line really is appropriate?
I was at West Ealing last weekend and noticed that the enamel signs have two covers over them, presumably displaying two different iterations of service patterns during the period between initial and full opening of the line.

Also TfL Rail roundels have started to be removed from the trains, some not very well as I saw at least one with chipped paint where it looked like someone had been a bit too eager with a scraper.
The "head of purple" also taps into a thousand archetypes, from Byzantine royalty "born in the purple" to present day Papal purple, and beyond.
“SW1 1AA” not “55 Broadway”. And TfL already has a Head of People and a Head of Reward.
Try abbreviating "via Elizabeth line" to fit a limited character text string without it being either undignified (Liz line), clumsy (Elizab l) or plain unhelpful (E line). TfL Rail is much more versatile.
via ERII line?
And remember that just as the London Overground and TFL Rail are part of National Rail, so too will be the Elizabeth Line. I have always maintained that the National Rail double arrow symbol should appear outside TFL managed stations (not purely Underground only stations though). What will happen when Great British Railways becomes live - I assume TFL will still want to do its own thing!!
"And remember that just as the London Overground and TFL Rail are part of National Rail, so too will be the Elizabeth Line."

How did I not know this before today?
I assumed that as it has been given a colour it was part of the Underground system!
I’m surprised by the type face being used today not being in purple!
Dear Head of Purple

The cost of the Elizabeth Line is only ever given to the nearest £100m (currently £18.7bn I believe) so another £50m or so on signage won't even show.

And with the ever-increasing cost of paint we stockpiled a few kilolitres of purple a few years back.

New signage has been installed recently at Romford saying Elizabeth line so I assume it will be called that once the central section opens

I expect the central section trains to be used along with the Eastern and Western ones. So you can't really have some trains saying Elizabeth and others TFL Rail
At the last Crossrail evacuation exercise the community ambassadors were there giving out TfL Rail branded goodies and joking "the TfL Rail brand is going away soon"
So many maps need changing that it would be a good time to split the Northern Line in to the Greathead Line and the Yerkes Line. (Don't change the timetable, just change the map.)
Much as the general public doesn't care about brand hierarchy, my inner pedant can't get over the use of "Elizabeth Line" as a mode as well as a line.

Tube trains don't wear a roundel specific to the line they're on, they say "London Underground", so why can't Elizabeth Line trains continue to be branded "TfL Rail", thus showing the clear distinction?

I forsee some confusion at Central London Elizabeth stations where interchange signage points to "Underground" rather then to specific lines.

I don't think the travelling public is going to care whether Elizabeth Line is or isn't "the tube", but it feels like TfL has tried to make it as much so as possible, whilst embracing a level of confusing doublethink to keep the lawyers quiet.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the months and years to come.
Has there been any indication of what the tickets issued at liz line stations will look like. I suspect they will be Network Rail (double arrow) and not Underground ones just to help with the confusion, as they will be Network Rail stations not LT ones!
Here's confirmation that the TfL Rail brand will be retired on day 1 and the entire disconnected railway from Berks to Essex will become the Elizabeth line.
