Wot I rekon is they did something over the the summer to give us the great Olympic weather and we got payback the following winter :‑b
Being pedantic...

"My word, the winter of 2013 stands out". It's really the winter of 2012/2013 and actually, the winter of 2009/2010 isn't far behind in terms of days when it snowed (12 versus 16) and is actually ahead in terms of days when it settled (6 versus 4).

Interesting you didn't experience the October snow of (I think) 2008. Massive (underlined) dumping of snow as far south as Farringdon at least - I was working late and it was thick snow from there all the way to Barnet on the way home.

dg writes: October 29th 2008. My diary is adamant that it didn't snow in central or east London where I was.
Mr BW and I were having a discussion last night about the pattern of snowiness over the years.

We'd decided to get out the 5 year gardening diaries (where it's noted) and make a list, when I suddenly thought, "Hmmm, we know someone who'd know and London won't be that different to here."

Excellent spell BW, excellent spell :)
Came here to escape the wall-to-wall snow coverage. Wrong!
Jan 8 2003 - thought that one might have maybe deserved an underline?

That was the last winter we spent in London. When the snow started to fall rather heavily every Australian in the office was pressed up against the windows in amazement, it was quite amusing.

dg writes: Having rechecked my diary - exactly the same reaction in my office, and 2 inches of snow on the ground. Underlined, thanks.
I'm pretty certain you haven't been in London every single day since Jan 1 2001 DG. Nevertheless, it is an interesting dataset.
Bring back 1963. That was real snow!
If you want to escape the snow, come to mid Dorset. We haven't had a flake yet this winter.
I live in Telford (shropshire) and this weekend has been the first time it's snowed here since 2013. It's also the heaviest we've had in ages. Bet Theresa May isn't happy that everyone's enjoying themselves!
According to Richard Curtis films, London is covered in a thick layer of snow for about 6 months of the year..
January 2013, one of those days must be when I was coming to London from the north east for a few job interviews. I slept in and couldn't find my smart shoes so I had to make do with the only pair I could find which had a big hole in each sole.
London geography being what it is, different ends of the city can get wildly different snowfalls. Out towards the Surrey end of town, nothing more than a few flakes ever settled yesterday. Whereas Easter 2008 left us a few inches deep (there were people skiing down Sutton High St) and DG records just a few flakes.

February 2009 is the only one I can recall that saw *serious* snow everywhere in London.
@Rogmi, I agree with you, the end of 1962 and first 3 months of 1963 was the worse winter in London that I remember. I hope it is never repeated.
glad you recommend the nw3weather website ... it's my go-to source of local information
Interesting stuff. And yes, it has to snow on the Air Ministry Roof to count for certain purposes. Do they still use that expression? (Indeed, do we still have an Air Ministry?).
I ran a weather station at Epping from 1979 to 2013

I notice that it hasn't snowed in Bow/Stratford on Christmas Day this century - closest was in 2005.
"do we still have an Air Ministry"

No, it merged with the Admiralty and the War Office to become the MoD in 1964.

For some years I worked in a building (since demolished) opposite the London Weather Centre. Because our building was taller, their measurements, including whether it was a White Christmas, were made on our roof.

The definition of a White Christmas is broader now, and can mean snow falling anywhere in London. (Lying snow from a fall the previous day doesn't count)
Feb 2 2009 deserves a double underline - 8 inches of snow in Central London! I'll never forget the sight when I opened the curtains that morning to see buses struggling not to skid into each other
London definitely has varied weather; last night I phoned a friend who lives in Carshalton and she said 'what snow?', apparently there was little or none to the southwest. I'm in the northeast part of London and pavements were still difficult to walk on this morning. It's nearly gone now, though.
You have actually had more snow in London so far this season than we have had in my part of Canada, but that won't last as we will be getting about 15 cm overnight!
The snow in Feb 2009 was so heavy, it has its own Wikipedia article:

I remember the snow of Feb 2009. I was on holiday in Far East, and on the way back from the beach, prior to getting the bus to the airport logged on....gobsmacked Breaking news on BBC website (10 mins ago). All buses in London withdrawn. Probably even included stop M. Still wonder to this day how that decision can be justified as some key routes were clear and driveable.
Feb 2009 was crazy, walked to work from Brixton and outside Buckingham Palace it was over 6 inches. All thanks to the Thames Tickle.

I think Jan 30 2003 also had all bus services suspended due to the snow which then melt a bit and froze to cover pretty much every road in central London with ice.

Jan 28 2004 was full on thunder snow, settled over 3 inches in less than an hour in Tufnell Park.

This year the conditions in Crouch End were very unexpected, about 4 inches up by Ally Pally.. Looking out my window roads and grass are still covered by snow. Incredible how localised it was as almost nothing south of the river.

Dec 2010 was also pretty deep if memory serves me correctly. We didn't have buses in Crouch End for several days.
Ahh, but we had better winters in the 60s...the snow and cold in the 62/63 winter seemed to go on forever... there's been nothing like that since...THANK GOODNESS!!!
I remember Feb 2009 fondly. My first day in my new job, and I was told not to bother to come in!
Was living in hilly Streatham in Dec 09. Absolute chaos. 18th was the day, a friday and I remember the snow falling just before the evening rush hour. People abandoning cars all over the place.
