Thanks for all the Open House pieces - interesting as always.

However, the suspicion is increased that 'Diamond Geezer' cannot be one solitary male with a day job who lives in Bow and travels everywhere by public transport. This marvelous blog has to be the work of 'Team DG'.
I'm with Ray. How on earth did you cover so much ground? Fascinating reports, as ever.
We did three OpenHouse venues on Sunday then I needed to sit down for a rest!
Your Crossrail tour was fascinating. Whereas we were disappointed by the Farringdon one - all you saw was the truck loading area, with the opportunity to peer through a wire fence to look down the escalator shaft....
It's not difficult to visit five venues on each day, especially when they're not too far flung.

In fact I visited more, but haven't bothered writing about...
...the school I trekked to which wasn't open
...the workplace in Tower Hamlets where I wasted Sunday morning
...the estate tour which left 15 minutes early so I missed it (and wasn't much of a tour anyway)
Did you see that Gladstone was leading tours of the Treasury? I was hoping you'd do that tour!

dg writes: Been there, toured that, 2008.
.... but 2008 was before Gladstone! :) A visit to Clapham Common Tube Station to view the current public protest about advertising would be purrfect too.
Did the SELCHP tour guide say anything about the H in SELCHP? The original idea (as in all CHP) was to capture some of the waste heat and create hot water to be pumped to local buildings for heating. Someone close to the original project told me (sorry about the poor source) that they really struggled to find anyone willing to pay anything to take the heat so it was commissioned just as a waste-to-power plant. Every time I see it I think it should be SELP. Would be interested to know if the renewable heat incentive changed things in recent years.
Mrs Pedantic tells people that the last time I took her out for the day it was to a recycling facility - Open House at SELCHP a few years ago. She exaggerates - slightly.

Tunnel Bore,

When we went around it was explained that they generated free hot water available to anyone who wanted it. The problem was that no-one was prepared to pay to pipe it to the nearest homes - which are not that nearby. Apparently insulated pipes are really expensive (although the Danes seem to have them in abundance).

So the "H" facility is there. It is just that no-one is taking advantage of the facility.
Envious that you got to the Billingsgate baths. We had a gap between two pre-booked tours -- St Pancras International and Mansion House -- and went to look at the queue and had second thoughts.
Good to know it's open at other times though. Thanks.
Tunnel Bore,

Five estates south of Southwark Park are getting heat from SELCHP. The pipes were laid ca 3 years ago, even with a diversion around the Silwood Estate (pipes now run below the footpath towards Surrey Quays Station) due to street maintenance issues.

There are plans to supply the New Bermondsey development with heat, if it ever gets built.
I doubt DG is like the couple I encountered in Greenford who turned up late for the advertised tour then asked the guide to hurry up as they had to get on to the next venue...
Four days of first-class Open House reports and I've read every one at least twice. I feel I should be paying... Thanks, DG.
I was lucky enough to tour SELCHP last year where there were no kids in the control room, so I managed to get a go on the giant claw and pick up 5 tonnes of rubbish and drop it in the incinerator. I'm not sure I'll ever top that as an Open House experience.

Also, I'd like to echo all the thanks for the fantastic reports of all DG's Open House adventures!
Just been catching up with your great set of reports. It is amazing how you manage to get around.

On "the steam heads upwards to be treated to remove toxins" - I would expect there to be some sort of heat exchanger, so it is the flue gasses that go up to get treated before disappearing up the chimney, while the water gets heated before heading to the generators (driven by turbines?). But perhaps the setup is different here?
