I’m surprised to read your comment about Loughton house prices.

According to the “tube map of London house prices” Loughton is one of the cheapest places to live on the entire tube network.

(Of course, I haven’t checked their working).

"Relief came beneath a railway viaduct..."

Disappointed I couldn't get past that without an unworthy thought and 'oo-er, Missus'. Quite ashamed of myself, as I should be.
For an account of the Roding valley and its wildlife around Loughton (before the LCC Debden estate was built), it's well worth tracking down a copy of 'Unto the Fields' by D W Gillingham, published by the Museum Press in 1953.
Brightside - those were my thoughts too, hehe!

It's usually the "friendly" dogs that are off-leash (for safety reasons) but that doesn't make me feel any better about it.
In fact they're the ones most likely to run over and have a good sniff around you. Plus I find that the smaller the dog, the more likely it is to jump up and deposit it's muddy paws and snotty slobber all over you too! Shudders.
My high school's old boys' sports field was compulsory-purchased to make way for the Charlie Brown's roundabout!
Stations which could have been called Roding Valley, given how close they are to the Roding:

250m: Ilford, Redbridge
400m: Buckhurst Hill, Debden, Roding Valley
700m: Barking, South Woodford
850m: Woodford
And at the descriptively named Roding Valley Recreation Ground, the river has been shifted bodily to the east, leaving parish boundaries and rights of way oddly dangling.
Fascinating. I walked the upper part of today's walk, connecting from the London Loop to walk towards Loughton, where I got caught out by the lack of bridges over the river and got stuck in attractive, but noisy countryside in that no man's land between J5 and the river!
