*hums te deum*
You can tell...

We'll watch the real thing, but avoid the semis precisely for the repetition reason - once is too much for most of them.
Eurovision Saturday is an all-family favourite in our house too. Every last minute of the voting even.. but we avoid the prelims as they ruin the surprise factor.
It was a bit sleepy, even by Vizsh standards. The only time I perked up was to scream "KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!" at the screen, and I can't even remember what country that was.
They have semi-finals now?!

I lost interest soon after Bucks Fizz won, then was out of the country for the best part of 20 years and haven't given it a second thought since!!

Tell a lie, I did catch part of it on a trip back to England many years ago, and lost count of the times I said "What? They're not in Europe!"

And in one case "What? They're not even in the Northern Hemisphere!"
Bloody love Eurovision, entirely unironically. No, I wouldnt buy any of it, but it's good fun.

Rather than sit through an entire series of Britain's Got the X-Factor Voice, here is one night (or three if you count the semis) of entertainment with (usually) amusing commentary (I think Paddy O'Connell is better than Norton), and a bit of international rivalry thrown in. Plus votes for stats fans to chew over.
The entry requirements of Eurovision involve being in the European Broadcasting Union. This is the union that bids for Europe-wide rights to a handful of major sporting events (eg the World Cup), as well as making their own productions. Broadcasting having a significant portion of geographic concerns involved (as opposed to political ones), they allow full members from the European Broadcasting Area as defined by the International Telecommunication Union. This includes all of Europe and some non-European countries too.

Australia was allowed in once because it's one of the few places outside Europe that tends to watch Eurovision as much as we do (they're also an EBU associate member), but it went down so well that they were allowed to stay.
It’s really refreshing to read and article and comments page that is comfortable acknowledging that - whilst the music isn’t to everyone’s taste - it’s a great piece of television.
"Hit parade" Showing your age aren't you, grandad? Mind you, what happened to those tunes you could sing along with? It seems this 'wrap' stuff is all the rage these days....
the Song Contest started off as a way to show off the continent-wide Eurovision network*, and it's still an impressive use of it today. The show itself has become a showcase for everything new and fancy in the world of stage lighting and TV technology too.

* which has two points of presence within a mile and a half of DG's flat.
This year isn’t a showcase for technology. The cheapskates at RTP decided it would be better without LEDs or modern lighting.

They were wrong.
Best entry ever - Poland 2014...
