Fine photos, thanks. Are there going to be any of the new visitor centre and A344 road closure?
I think that when I went there in 1961 you could walk right up to the stones.
Do not envy you all those crowds at Stonehenge!
Been there so many times on my trips to and from Cornwall, and it still thrills my heart when you catch that first glimpse. I really wish we could still walk among the stones at will.

Sounds like they're planning to build a new "sparkly" Stonehenge tourist attraction nearby though! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-23094202
Seems weird that you will have to take a mile and a half shuttle to get to the Stones, when the A303 still goes past them, so it's not as if the site is in isolation?
@ mikey
The closure of the A344 is only a minor part of the project - the principal part is the new visitor centre and car park, which they want to be much bigger than the present facilities - so it has to be further away.
The A303 is some distance further from the stones and relatively unobtrusive compared to the old A344 and the car park.
(The A303, as the prehistoric Harroway, has some claim to precedence over Stonehenge anyway.
Like John I also remember back in the early 1960's being able to walk in between the standing stones.
"blimey, it's Stonehenge!"
LOL, that's what I used to say as a boy in the '70's on the way to a Devon holiday destination.
Always interesting to read your take on places I know. Like many English cathedral cities I find that after the wonders of the cathedral and its close the rest of Salisbury is a little disappointing but that's perhaps inevitable.
Old Sarum is a lovely spot, though, and it's most famous for being a rotten borough in Georgian times; the town elected 2 MP's despite the fact that no-one lived there after the new city had been built.
And although it's not as iconic or photogenic as Stonehenge I can thoroughly recommend visitng the stone ring in the village of Avebury; it can be reached by bus from Pewsey or Swindon and should take less than 2 hours from Paddington.
Have to agree with Whiff. Having lived in and around Salisbury for 30 years, IMHO it's a mean-spirited little place which would be rightfully ignored if it wasn't for the Cathedral (which is lovely).
And +1 for Avebury - a much nicer experience than Stonehenge.
