Excellent report as always. Thanks DG.
Thank you,DG,for three most interesting and educational posts. It just goes to show that the suburbs are not boring at all,but have lots of fascinating facts and histories waiting to be found. I'm off today to explore somewhere new😊
I was wondering reading that last section whether you were going to take a picture or not ! Great read DG.
Excellent, and not too far from me to be able to follow in your footsteps - though I don't think I'd be brave enough to take a picture of Northwood HQ!
A lovely wintry sky too.
Unbelievable detail and research.
How do you ever find time?
Well done and thanks.

It is a nice quirk of the Royal Navy that it names its onshore establishments as if they were ships (such as HMS Warrior). This is said to have caused much amusement in WW2 when Lord Haw-Haw announced that HMS Kestrel (which was a Fleet Air Arm base on a hill near Winchester) had been sunk by a U-boat.
The Lord Haw Haw incident is a great anecdote. I was sceptical about whether it actually happened, but it is mentioned in the Churchill War Papers.

It must be quite hard to sink a stone frigate!
But then again a stone frigate probably wouldn't float very well either;)

Shouldn't that chilly road be called 'Frosthole Crescent' or something similiar?

Well done for being brave enough to take a photo of Northwood HQ!
A stone boat could float perfectly well, boats have been made out of concrete.
All it needs is for the water displaced to weigh more than the boat.
DG, maybe you should ask the people at the Three Rivers Museum if they can crack the conundrum of the Croydon sign spotted yesterday
@John Maltby
"A stone boat could float perfectly well, boats have been made out of concrete."
Such as Mulberry harbours.
It's always seemed strange to me that Britain's main defence HQ is in suburban London. Can't think of any good strategic reason for having it in the middle of London housing rather than, say, an Oxfordshire air base.
An air base is an obvious military target for enemy bombing raids. You want your strategic HQ to be well away from such places. It does need good transport links though, so the bigwigs can get there quickly.
Well, the Pentagon is just outside Washington DC, but Cheyenne Mountain is some distance away!
Re chilled areas, the A40 near Stokenchurch used to have a 'Road Liable to Freezing' sign.
Thanks very much for another really interesting series.
The Norwegian navy also names its onshore establishments as if they were ships, for example KNM Harald Haarfagre.
