Lovely!
Well done, Lambeth; truly raises the spirit.

But, meanwhile, other councils in the country have closed public toilets, withdrawn rural bus services, shut care homes and given up on road maintenance.

Have we got the balance right ? I don't think we have.
Meanwhile Lambeth is closing libraries.

But hey, its parks are gorgeous.
Blame the government that cuts local government services .......
Posts like this are what make your blog special. Once again something to do on most of our doorsteps that is both novel and interesting. Thank you.

However, you have not mentioned time or distance - my estimate 3 hours, 6 miles?! This is one I will definitely copy as part of a journey into / out of town.

And, are you aware that 'Comments' are not compatible with Win 10 MS Edge, at least on my new PC.
Reading posts like this reminds me why I should visit South London more.
Fantastic post, parks the lungs of any major city.
Blame a government that loads local authorities with expensive and mandatory statutory responsibilities but starves them of funding, so they can't do much of anything that they are not strictly required to do (and can't do the mandatory things well either).
.... or the government (all tiers) could raise more in tax. Everyone wants to take, take, take, but you can only take out what we - collectively, people and businesses - put in.
Yes, OK, absolutely.

Now, can we talk about parks? :)
the clouds on your photo of Ruskin Park are stunning
I wonder how many of those Lambeth parks you visited,DG, have a 'friends of' society raising funds to supplement the upkeep of these open spaces. As the funding is less and less from the councils, I think,do most people using those open spaces take it for granted that all the money is being provided by the local council? Here in L.B Bromley it isn't.
Brockwell Park: first encountered this, in a manner of speaking, in the late 80s when I was a surveying student, in one of the lectures on the principles of rating valuation.

More particularly, the park was the subject of a legal case heard before the Court of Appeal. It was determined that public parks were not subject to local authority rates as it was held that there was no "rateable occupier". See Lambeth Overseers v London County Council [1897] AC 625, or section 3.2 of this: http://manuals.voa.gov.uk/corporate/publications/Manuals/RatingManual/RatingManualVolume4/sect8/part3/i-rat-man-vol4-s8-ptc.html

So now you know and can rest assured.

Alas, it wasn't until around 2012 that I actually visited the park.
Lovely pix'n'writing, in Kennington Park, Stan Laurel I presume.
Hooray for Lambeth parks indeed - not least because they all have really active Friends groups who have so far helped to mitigate the effects of 40% council funding cuts in recent years and bring in Lottery and other grant funding.

Anyone who may be asking 'what they can do for their country', join your nearest park Friends group and reap the rewards.
