Don't want to quibble (OK, I do!) but surely the biggest explosion in the UK took place at Fauld, Staffordshire, in 1944. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Fauld_explosion

Tony

The ExCel centre is one of the few places I have visited in the last few years. I arrived via London city airport and stayed at the Holiday inn near the ExCel centre. I did not know what I was missing.

The name of the King George V Dock indicates that it was VERY late 19th century! It was built between 1912 and 1921.

‘my older readers might love’ .........cheeky.
No I was not aware of the Music Hall.
Have now booked a matinee for songs from both world wars, fancy coming?

I particularly like that there is a typo in the Royal [me] Dock section.

"middle-of-nowhere place". Bet my parents have been though! Not many things they haven't done in London, including visits down sewers and being escorted onto a tube train, via the drivers cab, in the middle of a tunnel, complete with hard hats and flourescent jackets!!

My, one learns something new every day here - re. Itchycoo Park.

It's not often that I think of the words "Manor Park" (or indeed "Little Ilford") alongside the word "beautiful".

Wow

But did you visit Ronnie Lane, E12 (the street) dg? Just north of Little Ilford Park, not terribly inspiring but a nice and appropriate tribute.

I don't like Newham-I have to work there sometimes. But your posts still manage to make it sort of interesting. When I saw the word Newham I thought...not sure I want to read this but you always manage to make the posts work.

It looks like the person on the bench doesn't have any shoes on.

the Royal Victoria Dock bridge is actually incomplete- along with the high deck, it was supposed to be a transporter bridge- this sort-of explains the odd arrangement of the access to the steps and and lift. Don't think there's any active plans to complete it though.

It makes a fantastic specating gallery during the London Boat Show- at the weekends, escpecially the second one, there's various on-the-water displays including sailing racing. Very odd to see sailing from above.

Horrible place to sail, mind, as I've experienced.

the Western end of the docks are due to be a "Green Enterprise District" - a certain German engineering firm are building a big pointy ("iconic", natürlich) glass building, which appears to be pitching itself as something of a visitor attraction.

I have always understood that Itchicoo Park refers to Wanstead Park , access off Northumberland Avenue (not Wanstead Flats). Wanstead Park has two ponds so fits the bill better than Little Ilford Park.

I'm sorry but by picking Itchycoo Park and then crossing out the word "pretty" is a rather dumb thing to do.

You seem to want to mock Newham as others do and no wonder it gets a bad reputation. There is loads of history in Newham probably more than most London Boroughs and there are "pretty" places, try the gardens in West Ham Park for instance.
