The only reasons I can offer is a) you're less mobile for health/disability reasons, or b) if you're having a party and ordering a lot of food that'd be a pain to carry.
|
I worked in a shop, with a guy once who got in his car to drive about 200 yards to the McDonalds.
He was exceptionally lazy in all aspects of life though. |
They've probably just delivered the flyers to everyone in their catchment area. I have two branches that I'm within a mile of, and got the same flyer this week.
Burger King have been offering a similar service for a week while now, from their Stratford branch. (I'm surprised they've not flyered you too) |
Is that two minutes there and back, or two minutes there and another two minutes to get back?, also putting on shoes and possibly getting dressed, also how far is the pavement from the flat you live in?
Plus the time you take thinking about what to get, then waiting for the order. We could be looking at 10-15 minutes, this is starting to look like hassle (also its approaching the sort of time taken to microwave something). |
It could very bad weather and you really, really want to eat a burger and chips. Why go out if it can be delivered?
|
As far as I'm aware, marketing cards/leaflets generate a maximum response rate of less than 1%. For your area, that is still quite a lot. I also suspect that some poor sop has contracted to deliver millions of these bum wipers and to evidence that they've actually been delivered.
I also believe pregnant people develop cravings for mon-food items to chew on at odd times of the day. McNotfood is perfect for them, I presume. |
Our flyer appeared to have been delivered by the postie.
|
It's just another step in shifting the boundary of what is normative behaviour. Like, coffee, anyone?
|
Why walk when you can spend five more minutes in front of the TV?
|
If you have young children in the house (especially say a sleeping baby) or are mobility impaired in some way then you wouldn't consider a 5 mins walk short.
If you are going to order in then you can do rather better than McDonalds, of course. |
I am often amazed watching examples of bone idleness in general life - a current popular one is blocking the supermarket car park waiting for a car to leave that's 2 spaces closer to the entrance than a vacant slot - so I'd imagine this will be a huge success.
Even back in my pizza delivering 90's customers wouldn't walk 50m to pick up their order for free. |
It wouldn't be so surprising in the US, where sometimes roads are designed to be anti-pedestrian and it may really be easier to drive. Also if the weather is really hot.
|
I think you are just part of a circle that has been drawn around the McDonalds branch (maybe of a mile or so) that has been targeted for leafleting.
They are targeting people 10 minutes walk away (or a round trip of nearly 30 minutes say). |
They're just telling you they're still around. No need to take it too seriously.
|
I take it you're not loving it?
|
Re Martin at 7.53. You're flier was quite likely delivered by the postie. As a postman I deliver up to 7 advertising shots each week to every house on my round. They are targeted by postcode & delivery round so households on council estates will get different advertising from households in somewhere like Hampstead (although everyone seems to get pizza leaflets). The Royal Mail refers to them as door to doors rather than 'junk mail'.
|
Don't fall for this!!!!! McDonalds is trying to make the rest of the world as fat as we are here in America. Stay strong, England. You deserve better than crappy burgers and such.
|
My nearly 20 year old son always gets a free delivery from the local Chinese, which is about a 3 minute walk away!
More gaming time - though to be fair, Chinese does take longer to cook than a McWarm-up! |
Another +1 for families with young kids in the house. It's not gourmet but the coffee is good for the price, and you know you're (mostly) not going to get food poisoning. (Plus the toilets will be clean which doesn't apply to delivery obviously)
|
Ex-housemates used to get deliveries from the local Chinese takeaway, all of 3 minute's walk away. No kids, no disabilities, no other excuses except laziness. I didn't use it anywhere near as much as them but one time they phoned for themselves, I walked there, ordered mine and was back home before their moped rider turned up. They still didn't care.
Nowadays my excellent local Indian takeaway is collection only. But it's almost exactly a mile either way so I drive :o< |
Reasons.
You are female and it is late at night. Two minutes might seem like a long time. You are in some way disabled or mobility impaired or have recently been ill as I was once and simply didn't feel like cooking / have many fresh ingredients. You are catering for a children's party. You have young children at home and don't want the hassle of going out. It's pissing down. |
Also, the targeted folk are (a) made aware that McD takeaway exists and (b) may be inspired to call in a delivery to someone else's place or to a workplace.
And they won the office sweep by getting DG to mention them. |
I must confess I have ordered delivery from a shop around 300m from my doorstep. It was not my finest hour, but we are all entitled to such silliness, and hangovers are a potent justification of this sort of thing.
