No DLR, no overground, no National Rail.

I don't need a distance, I'd just like to know which two stations you think the furthest journey is between.

To start you off, for question a), I reckon £4 will get you from Oxford Circus (zone 1) to Grange Hill (zone 4). Can you beat that?

Richmond to Chesham via Zones 3-9 £4.00, changing at Turnham Green and at either Acton Town or Ealing Common.

Oh and Rayners Lane and again at Harrow on the Hill.

Sorry, according to the TfL Single Fare Finder, Richmond to Chesham is £5.50 cash. Even if you go via Rayners Lane, TfL assume you went via Zone 1, and charge accordingly.

Question b)

Just looking at the map, I think the furthest you can go for 1.30 is Wembley Park to Amersham. I believe that there are through trains between those stations.

If you allow interchanges then I think it would be Heathrow Terminal 5 to Amersham or Chesham.

dg writes: Interchanges are allowed, yes. But Heathrow to Chesham is £7 cash, according to the Single Fare Finder.

Grrh...the ripping sound you can hear is me tearing draft questions for the London Reconnections Christmas Quiz.

Using the single fare finder I think it may be Upney on the District line to Sudbury Hill on the Piccadilly line interchanging at Ealing Common.

Assuming it's working you could probably spend all day going in circles on the Circle line

For the longest for £1.30, I'm going to guess Bethnal Green to Epping. (Assuming that Bethnal Green to Bethnal Green via the Hainault loop is disallowed)

Works for £1.30, if you click on the alternative oyster fare and go via route 2.

dg writes: ooh, I hadn't spotted the "Alternative Fares" button. Unfortunately Route 2 is via the Overground. But Route 3 is good for £1.30.

I have Bermondsey to Epping via Stratford coming out as £1.30 by OyPAYG.

dg writes: 15 miles

I'm going for Turnham Green to Chesham via Rayners Lane for the long 'un.

DG, you *do* know about the pink coloured Oyster pads where OyPAYG can 'check in' mid journey outside of Zone 1 stations, yes...?

I now think the longest 1.30 fare may be Upminster to Epping.

I'll go for Grange Hill to Hounslow Central - £4.00 cash

dg writes: 22 miles!

> Upminster to Epping

Are we counting distance as the crow flies, or distance on the rails? It matters because this one is either ~15 miles or ~30 miles!

dg writes: As the crow flies - 11 miles

A list of stations with pink validators is here.

Blackhorse Road, Canada Water, Gospel Oak, Gunnersbury, Highbury & Islington, Kensington (Olympia), Rayners Lane, Richmond, Stratford, West Brompton, Whitechapel, Willesden Junction, Wimbledon, Woolwich Arsenal.

I've got my ruler out, and here are the best "as the crow flies" distances so far.

£4 cash

Grange Hill to Hounslow Central: 22 miles

£1.30 Oyster (off-peak)
Richmond to Chesham (via Rayners Lane): 21 miles

Unless you know better...

I reckon either Upminster or Epping to Heathrow T5, both of which look to be about 35 miles. Change onto the London Overground service and use the pink validators to set the "not via Zone 1" flag on your journey, so it's charged as a Z2-6 instead.
