I knew there was a spur to Hackbridge, but I've never seen a map of it before. I suppose it makes sense that the last bit alongside the river is an industrial park nowadays, but the Wandle Path runs along the other shore and I go that way often. There's a little decked area in the parking lot that hangs out over the river and the office workers go out for their tea and lunch in nice weather there. At that point they only have Wilderness Island to look at and aren't disturbed by the path walkers.
Calico works. Yes the calico used to come from India and then, because it was hard, was bleached and laid in the sun to soften it up. All the discharge would go into the Wandle. I've seen some old drawings of this along the banks of the Wandle. Unpleasant and unhealthy for the poor old workers.
Kiss Me Hardy may be the worst pub name I have ever heard.
Nelson used to live in the area, so there were a lot of Nelson themed pub names. The Trafalgar (an excellent pub), the Nelson Arms, and the Victory. Which is now called The Holden after Charles Holden. So anyway...

Names with tradition. Names with heritage.

And then came Kiss Me Hardy with its Wacky Warehouse.

I lived in the area for over 11 years. I only went in Kiss Me Hardy once. We decided we should visit all the local pubs at least once.

That one time was enough thanks.
Property developers do seem to have a bit of a thing for Quarters. Not sure if they think it will give the impression of an exciting cosmopolitan area thanks to an implied association with Paris, but to me it just comes across as a bit desperate.
Will try and visit the Priory Museum, but The Sultan pub is the best reason to visit Collier's Wood
It's a shame you couldn't write about Wandsworth either as some concrete benches are flanked by a row of wooden sets from the Surrey Iron Railway which have been embedded in the pavement in Garratt Lane near the junction with Mapleton Road, just before the Wandle disappears beneath the Southside Centre.
