2 - I understand the concept, but is it possible for signage to be considered touchless and push-button simultaneously?
dg writes: yes |
Vocabulary I had to look up in leo.org today: arrears, ground (to grind), vexatious

(26) I await the first FOI request as to how much the uniform change will cost, and why should tax payers pay for it. Oh and "waste of money" as a sign off.

19) seems to be linking to IDAG - or is it just me?

30) I guess TfL might also end up with a Berliner BVG type compromise, where the brief was to find something that is not immediately recognisable as male or female the first time you hear it.
Ms Phillipa Jarka, the voice of the BVG since 2021. |
Time to risk a surely - surely the temperature thresholds for MAXIMUM output should be "when above 35°C and falling or above 33°C and rising". Perhaps a transcription error from the FOI respondent.
dg writes: never risk two surelys by assuming a perhaps |
30) TfL were able to reject those requests because they were all submitted by one person in quick succession, but would have had no grounds to reject a similar flurry if different people had asked. On one level I struggle to see the difference.

5) A.J. Wells & Sons are one of the most interesting Island-based companies. Five members of the family are still involved in the business, and were interviewed on local TV not long ago.

15. I can't believe someone went to all the bother to even ask!!

18) Would be interesting to see the breakdown per platform at Baker Street.
21) Impressive stuff. The NR upgrades in the west can't come soon enough! |
The annoying part of 15 is that some councils I work with are claiming that TfL is cleaning the roads, even though it is the borough's responsibility and the roads I am noticing aren't being cleaned.

26. David: the new uniforms will be phased in as and when the old ones are due for regular replacement anyway is my understanding.

9. The "Above 35C and rising" doesn't actually make sense. The temperature could be 40C, neither rising nor falling and the "MEDIUM otherwise" would apply: swelter! If I were designing it the MAXIMUM would always be for above 35C. The "above 33C and falling" gives the system hysteresis so it doesn't keep switching in and out at the 35C mark. In reality, the amended words would be the way it actually works...

I LOVE this series – thank you!

I was in Wolverhampton earlier this month for my new job. I actually experienced the touchless crossings close to The Royal tram stop.

30) The book 'Londoners' by Craig Taylor (2011) includes a short but interesting account by Emma Clarke who voiced the announcements.
"... when I got the call from London Underground I was at the restaurant with a guy I was seeing at the time and he said, ‘God, I’ll hear you everywhere.’... We split up after that... you’re having a bad day and you get on the Tube and there’s the voice. Poor guy." |
