Interesting start to Local History Month, I'm looking forward to the rest. Beautifully written too.
Thanks

'the sight of a fox and the unmistakable smell of weed'

I've travelled around a fair bit of the country myself, and have NEVER seen a fox smoking dope. And you didn't even get a picture!

Thanks for this Diamond, its great. I lived round here for years and really liked it but never realised the Lea started in Houghton Regis. I thought it started to the south at Lewsey Park but a simple check of the map proves you right.

You caught the cornfields on a good day because the brook isn't always running like that but I remember taking the kids to the little slab bridge just before the motorway and hunting for sticklebacks. Apparently if you look hard enough there are stone age tools around about there.

At the very wide pedestrian underpass some unfortunate was murdered a few years ago so I am glad you got through OK. The park to your right just before you go under the M1 is not Bedfordshire at all. Its soil waste from Leicestershire bought up during the making of the M1

Thanks Mate

This looks much more interesting than the New River path. May be tempted to do this myself

Arr, city lad! I think you mean wheat field!! :D

Luton. Lovingly referred to as Loo-town by my mate who lives up there.

CornishCockney - I can confirm that the term 'cornfield' is correct as DG used it ... 'corn' is a generic term for any type of cereal: wheat, barley, oats, rye etc.

(see eg: http://www.answers.com/corn)

I've commented on the Flickr photo of the "orchids" about their true identity. But they are pretty (which is why they were introduced) and they are also nicely scented (when will we get RSS - really simple smellynet?).
