Audio guide? For that price, I'd expect a personal guide by a minor member of the landed gentry!
I assume you used the 'bus/train/bike' discount - which makes it just about affordable. £32 is dearer than Windsor Castle. How did you get from Oxford station, bus or did you take your bike all the way? Whatever, it looks like a great place to visit.
Top tip ... if you take the A44 Manor Road out from Woodstock northwards, just before The Black Prince pub you will see double gates on your left hand side ... these lead onto a public footpath which goes through Blenheim Palace grounds ... technically you're not allowed to cross Vanbrugh's Grand Bridge as then you're on private property
"Apparently there's also a secret garden but I didn't find that." It's a short walk from the equally hard to find garden railway!
I was (taken) there in 1957 and subsequently - so I'm told - used it as the theme in the traditional 'What I did in my holidays' school essay. Back then, the standard entry fee for stately homes was half a crown - 12.5p. We did get there by bus, but I suspect the discount is a more recent incentive.
£32 isn't really that expensive for a full day out, plus the ticket is valid for 12 months so you can see the gardens through the seasons, Oxford is not that far to go for many people.
Is Alexandra Palace not also non-royal/ecclesiastical?
When I went there was a life size model of one of Charles 2s mistresses in bed with John Churchill (later Marlborough) hiding in the wardrobe. The King apparently surprised them. I had my pic taken with her ;-)
Alexandra Palace was not built as a residence. It was built as an entertainment / moral improvement venue.

Much like the Crystal Palace. Or the Hammersmith Palais for that matter.
Sounds like Grand Day Out and what perfect timing!
Happy memories of doing two circuits of part of the grounds on a previous Brompton World Championship, with it’s ‘Le Mans style’ running start.
I have the happiest memories of visiting Blenheim at least twice as a kid (well, once as a kid and once as a teenager). Thanks for bringing them back!
Top Tip: you can use your Tesco vouchers to buy an admission ticket to Blenheim Palace. Thus reducing the cost to a much more manageable £10.50.
Blenheim Palace is built of limestone, rather than sandstone.
