I reckon you'd have more luck in Romford, the 'Gateway to Essex'.
Sorry to be "that guy" who points this out, but <linkage error which has now been corrected>.

This was however an informative and, as is often the case, witty read DG - keep up the great work!
The Kenton is, indeed, a very nice pub.
Mystery count = Valentine’s cards?
I used to enjoy swimming in the lido in Valentine's Park. Sadly it was closed down just a few years before open air swimming took off again.
More evidence of the outrage that is Fonts On Street Signs In Southwark.
Essex used to play County Championship cricket in Valentines Park until at least the late Eighties, when I recall attending a game and getting very sunburned.
Lovely post! What a great way to mark the day.
You were within a goal kick of my new place. Valentine's Park is a real delight and can't wait for the summer.
Happy Valentine's Day from Gent / Ghent!

A big thank you to all the readers who suggested this lovely place to visit, and DG for selecting it. Based on experience I suggested Liege, now I know better.

Oh, and our hotel has pink neon heart shaped loops in the garden our room looks out on to, very romantic...
Fascinating post.

On Valentine Road the front wall of each house rises up to conceal the pitched roof from view. Behind the wall is the rainwater run-off known as a parapet gutter - notorious for getting blocked with dead leaves and being difficult to clean.
Well, well, well! I had no idea that the tiny cul-de-sac I cross on a weekly basis whilst foraging between Sainsburys and Iceland in South Harrow was called Valentine Road!!

You were right not to bother with it!!
If I'd known DG was going to use "nullified" I'd have put on a smarter shirt this morning.

A browse of the National Library of Scotland's Ordnance Survey maps (the 1:1056 series of 1895 is best) will give a productive check of these old streets. Any intervening changes of street name just make it more challenging in a good way. The Southwark map says "Confectionery Works" and I'd have to agree with its sentiment.

That's some future whole evening's study taken care of, excellent.

That Hackney street name sign would have looked bland and functional-not-decorative in its early days but now it can wear its rust with historical pride.

Thanks DG, a grand and nourishing post.
VALentine is another of London's Lost Telephone Exchanges, serving the Ilford North area around Valentine's Park from a building on its west side. Sadly it's a bit less romantic these days, having become the anonymous 020 8554.
Loved this - please add route 425 to the E9 Valentine Road, soon (?) to serve exotic Ilford and almost link to Valentine Park...

Have you, DG considered visiting some or all of the 11 roads in London titled 'Paradise ...' - few would pass any Ad' Standards Authority test for passing off as something Elysian.
