I feel old when I go back (same place, different college) - and what's worse, I only left a few years back. I take it from your post it gets worse with advancing years. I find it difficult to tell from your very occasional posts about university, whether you enjoyed it or not though?

We have a week of open-days here at QMUL (just up the road from you dg). Looking around at the prospective class of 2009, the only thought in my mind was "I was never that young".

It's even worse when you are one of the "chaperoning parents", and you want to kick the sullen 17 year old and tell him not to waste the opportunity, as you did 40 years ago!

Oh, and there's more ritual humiliation to come as we do it all again next week at the "other" one

i would say "This is the best post of the year" its remind my past golden age

Never go back, that's my motto. It's 40 years for me, so I read the magazines with benign detachment and never go to formal reunions. And have you ever tried re-reading your old essays? I did once - not a clue what I'd been talking about.

"Irrelevant vision of an unknown past". Almost as good as "The past is a different country".

She obviously had no idea you are DG-champion blogger. The seaside and a bag of chips- better idea.

Did the girl you spoke to immortalise the conversation with a "Wottevver"?

Do all universities have the same open day? I caught a train from Newcastle to London yesterday and it was packed with young things, carrying University of Newcastle plastic bags and shrieking a lot.

My university had its open day on the 14th June. Funnily enough, they had scheduled it on the same day as when the halls of residence were being vacated for the summer. I just wonder what sort of chaos that caused.

Hi diamond you didn't mention the university name

During the busy parts of the academic year, open days are held on Wednesday (half day lectures to allow sports and recreation in the afternoon). By now, all of the examiners' meetings are over, 90\\% of under grad students have disappeared so you could hold an open day any time before the end of term, which is probably Saturday.

First and second year undergrads always seem implausibly young, though I doubt that they have changed much in maturity since DG was one. Third year under grads grow up incredibly quickly as finals approach. Taught and research post grads from the EU, who have experienced the finals trauma, are generally a lovely bunch -- energetic but level headed, and I miss the fun of working with them. I won't miss the fact that they never have enough money for a round of beer...

the picture looks like the Bodlean with one of the Turl Street colleges in the background...

Siddiq: If you want the name of the university, the clues are there. You may have noticed that the photo is labelled "dreaming spires". Try googling that.

There are 46 Colleges and Halls in Oxford. London Bus Route 46 (lowest numbered rigid single decker?) Runs between Lancaster Gate and Farringdon St....
Number of colleges in my old University...NIL.(poor show).
Any other famous contemporaries dg?

Ah, so you went to University the same year as I did. I still have the hulking great suitcase that I took with me (complete with name and 01- phone number written inside in marker). It holds all of our camping stuff now. And you know what it *does* have two little wheels. Must have been a new innovation.

I only had a ZX Spectrum.

I soon learned at freshers week that the very eager people who wanted to befriend me we invariably members of the chaplaincy, who wanted to get all Christian on me.

Real friends followed about 3 weeks later. Happy times.

Down a bit, past their heads. Stop. Down a bit more. Stop. Left a bit, left a bit more. Stop. Fire. Kings Arms.

A view past the Sheldonian towards the Bod 5 Orders Tower and Hertford.

Five orders? Okay then... three pints of bitter and two sherries for the girlies.
