Along the short, level, section of Mitchley Avenue after the drop down from Sandersteasd and before the rise up to Riddlesdown and the longer fall to Purley, you would have passed a semi-circular layby.

I can't manage to save a map, but you can 'drive' down the route from the Sanderstead aerial map to the east-west section of Mitchley Ave A2022.

There you will see the former turning circle, constructed by the LPTB for buses on the 203 (later 234) route up from Purley to terminate at the 'new' housing development in 1935. This service was run by six wheel single deck LT class buses, known as Scooters. Later the route was extended to Selsdon, as the forerunner of your 412.

As a further matter of interest, just due south of this redundant turning circle are four or five bomb craters in the field, which still appear to be a problem for the farmer.
Excellent information about the 203/234 turning circle. I should like to add that the 203 commenced service using the only Gilfords ever employed in London Transport's red bus area. These were replaced by miniature Dennis Darts in March 1936, before the 203 was replaced by the 234, which as Petras409 says was operated by Scooters. There's a picture of a Scooter on the 234A (OK, not quite the same route, but they operated the route jointly) on www.Red-RF.com/rf-392.
The 412 is one of my favourite London routes for scenery - a far cry from routes that run on parallel roads between Croydon and Purley.
