The extent of the "paying tribute" was and is unexpected.

Normal programming in Germany, Egypt and Russia was broken into (personal knowledge, and there are no doubt many other countries where the same happened).

I suppose it is all recognition that a historical era (of Heads of State connected with the Second World War) is almost at an end, rather as 1965 was recognised as the end of another historical era (of heads of government who led in the Second World War).

The first Prime Minister who had no connection with the Second World War was John Major, so that link broke nearly 30 years ago.
Amazing tribute - thankyou DG..!
When I saw the first one on my feed reader I thought this was going to be a collection of Photoshopped pictures.

Did they paint it black especially or was it like that already?
The use of digital advertising screens makes this easy. If all those sites had relied on traditional posters, it would have taken days to change them all
He’ll be particularly touched by the tribute from the A12. It was His Royal Highness’s favourite A-road.
Capitalism pays tribute.
Yeah, starting to feel like this is a rehearsal. I actually worry what people will think as we need to take not only HM The Queen but also HRH The Prince of Wales in mind in relatively near future.
Barking and Fenchurch Street stations were also paying tribute. Perhaps HRH once travelled on the C2C.
It occurs to me that if they can all be updated remotely (which is unsurprising when you think about it) then if someone could get access to the system...
DG, it looks like Gyles Brandreth reads your blog.

I really like him and his sense of humour.
These advertising things are only happening because the cabinet Office has been issuing 'advice' to all businesses on appropriate behaviour during official mourning. I'm not a Republican but I find this bordering on the Orwellian.
I cycle down Stroudley Walk twice a week. Must remember to check that phone box isn't a Photoshop job, haha. If it's real, which I trust it is, it's such a weird one - that someone was tasked with adding that text to that box.

Friday/Saturday I had to turn BBC6 off because of the relentless and ridiculous playing of sad songs. What about the thousands who have died needlessly who haven't had the same respect shown?
