I have often wondered about the 12:00 rule as well. After all today is known as April Fool's Day (apologies to all pedants out there if I've used the apostrophe incorrectly).
On another note would somebody please tell me what the middle two sets of letters in gt's comment mean. I know what lol and ttfn stand for but for the life of me I can not work out what tks and brb stand for.

Ah, comment No 2, there's no such time as 12pm. AM and PM mean "ante-" and "post-meridiem": before/after noon. 12 o'clock is neither before nor after noon: it IS noon.
It would have been more correct to simply say it was already pm.
