Thanks for the update - the entrance/exit is very slightly closer to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry now, which I keep meaning to visit!
It's interesting (and good) how much work TfL have put into providing an alternative entrance, although I do wonder how much it all costs...
One problem that I have noticed is that when leaving the platform and climbing the stairs you are instructed to "Keep Left" and when you get to the top of the stairs and turn right towards the new exit you have to cross the line of incoming passengers as the exit gates are on the right hand side and the incoming gates are on the left.
Looks like people trying to exit Whitechapel station are going to be getting a lot more exercise for a while!
I hope the old lightbox has been relocated to the TFL museum and not just the nearest skip.
Worth noting that the new temporary entrance is where there will be new staff accommodation and offices in the completed station. Therefore the work and cost is part of the end product.

I hate to quibble with DG but the escalators being constructed will go up (not down) to the new concourse being constructed over the Overground tracks. Access to Crossrail will be at the north end of that concourse via a new deep shaft down to CR's platforms. The future station has a curious mix of upper and lower concourses which are both above the Overground's tracks.

dg writes: No, please do quibble. Thanks for the confirmation, and I've tweaked the post in response.

Just to be sure I tracked back to some official documentation (Environmental Statement non technical summary). What is interesting is that the original programme envisaged the use of the temporary entrance from August 2013 so I can only assume the programme has been rescheduled. Otherwise the work is running a long way behind schedule! It was planned that the original entrance would reopen in April 2017 but it's now back to December 2018.
I'm just hoping that they're gonna reopen Durward Street as it was bad enough walking from the library (sorry, "Idea Store") to the old entrance when the market is on.

I can get to work using either the Hammersmith and City east line or the Overground South. I think my use of the orange line is gonna drastically decrease with the new opening.
I liked the scruffiness of the 'old' Whitechappel station. Something else of old London being swept away. Bah!!
I notice all the tiles are ripped off the walls at Holland Park too...
Flippant I know but saying "turn left at fried chicken shop" on Whitechapel High St is like saying "turn left at the lamppost".
Gavin, if you end up on Whitechapel High Street, you've gone too far....
Whitechapel is my regular commute station and I'm surprised that there is no clock or London Overground electronic information boards by the ticket barriers. I asked a staff member today about this and he replied that there are no plans to install them. I find this hard to believe.

Are TfL not aware how many commuters wait by the ticket gates waiting for the clock to strike 9.30am or 7pm before going through? I've done this a few times when leaving work late. I'm only saving 20p, but why should I go through at 1859 when my train leaves at 1904? If TfL will insist on peak times with PAYG price differentials, a clock is a must at all stations.

Much as TfL like to pretend, the London Overground is not a turn up and go service. All trains are time-tabled and us Overground commuters know this. We turn up at stations to catch a specific train and want to know if our trains are on time, late or cancelled. Imagine a national rail station without info boards before the ticket barriers. Wouldn't happen. TfL really do struggle understanding the psyche of national rail users. We do not behave like turn up and go tube users! This was evident when they took over Anglia franchise last year and immediately stopped sending out twitter alerts on specific trains.
Helping a lady with her pushchair? You've changed...
For reasons I do not understand, this picture of Court Street is already one of my Top Five Most-Favourited Photos On Flickr, Ever.

@ Lumma - I believe Durward St will be reopened when the Crossrail works are done. The new concourse runs underneath Durward St but is at its most restricted heightwise when it does so.

@ Agent Z - yep I had the same sort of fondness for the old Whitechapel station. It was cramped and congested and twisty / turny but had its own character. I remember trying to work out how to squash ticket gates in all those years ago when I was responsible for such things. Not sure some of the locals liked what we did!

@ Mars Bonfire - it took forever to get a departure board put up at Blackhorse Rd for GOBLIN services and it's inside the gateline and not easy to read from outside it. I am astonished that there is no clock in the new Whitehchapel ticket hall. I thought all ticket halls had to have one. I'd complain to LU about that if I were you.
I was idly browsing through the Flickr album when I suddenly noticed "73 faves" and thought, "That can't be normal." None of the other pictures appear to have been affected. Any idea where they all came from?
They arrived via Flickr's 'Explore' feature, a daily top 500 of the most-liked photos globally. Sometimes a few favourites is all it takes to propel you into the list, and then the world comes looking and the number of favourites shoots up.

Why it's happened to this photo, though, I don't know.
@ Lumma Ah yes, Whitechapel High Street is up by the Aldgate stations.

What's the correct name for the road by Whitechapel station?
@Gavid. Simply Whitechapel Road, the second worst property on the monopoly board.
The footbridge at the northern end of the Overground platforms has been removed. It looks like they are lengthening the platforms.
