I think you are in Manchester, no wonder you said you had an early start!
Despite Manchester's reputation it looks like it was not raining!.
I was there the weekend before last. One of the eeriest sights was a Chinese Lantern festival site, near the Trafford Centre, which a few days earlier been ravaged by Storm Katie. The Trafford Centre itself was also a bit of an eye-opener!
Did you go to Heaton Park and ride on the old-fashioned trams? Well worth a visit if you have the time.
Virgin trains cheap fares deal?
I'm going to Coventry on it next weekend!
Which reminds me, to check if you've been there and have written about it!

Ah, you did! And almost 8 years to the day earlier!
I can only figure out where one of these pictures is (Corporation St Bridge). Despite being born in Cheshire I don't remember ever visiting Manchester. Jealous.
Definitely Manchester. That pillar box in the 3pm is possibly the only one with a memorial plaque. It appeared, undamaged, in many photos in the aftermath of the 1996 IRA bombing.
@ Lorenzo - if you tap on the photos and open them in Flikr, they're captioned.
Growing up in Greater Manchester, it was a very sad day when the IRA bomb struck - it let to BBC One postponing the series two finale of 'Bugs' :(
Salford?
Welcome to Manchester! As an ex-Londoner and an avid reader of your blog, I'm delighted that you're looking around the premium cities of the North, Manchester and Salford. I note that you visited Salford in August 2013 - you probably note that there's even more overpriced apartments, but then the whole of the centre of Manchester is one big building site. Lots going on transport-wise - I don't know how much time you had to explore on the Metrolink tram, but Manchester Victoria Station is a must. We are all looking forward to newer trains than the South-East (!) over the next 3-4 years with the new Northern and Trans-Pennine franchises. Any other Londoners want a weekend away, there's lots to see and do in Manchester and the Virgin trains from London are very frequent (although fares vary wildly).
NLw Thanks, was a bit sleepy this morning.
On my first visit to Manchester I arrived after dark and had no end of trouble finding my place to stay in Salford. Perhaps thanks to my London accent, pretty much every person I asked how to get to Langworthy Road gave me perfect directions to Langley Road, the result of which was going round in circles and passing along certain roads about four times.
Along one of them I was initially surprised to see 'ladies of the night.'
If going past them the first time was accidental, the second was unintended, and the times after that were just, well... starting to get a bit embarrassing :O
Manchester is buzzing at present with a pleather of building work and new openings, tram extension and a restaurant scene that is second only to London. Hope you enjoyed.
What's a premium city..?

Why can't it just be a city like many others.. Snobbery gone beserk..
Rick I think you mean 'plethora' rather than plastic leather.
