I'm actually just old enough to remember when the castle and its tearoom were open first time round :)
It was great, locally, to hear it was to be restored and that it was to re-open again (not just for occasional London Open House days) on a regular basis.
Captain James is actually buried at Eltham Church.
Another nearby point with good views is (surprisingly, given how much lower down the hill it is) Greenwich Cemetery, next to Well Hall Road.
It is good that many of the buildings featured on Restoration 10 years ago have actually been restored.
After visiting Severndroog, its worth taking time to walk further up Shooters Hill for more fantastic views across the city, then on to Oxleas Meadows for panoramic views to the east and south. There's a park cafe at Oxleas which sells more traditional cafe fare and has fantastic views from its terrace.
Saw your information on Severndroog and was inspired to go. Got to the top and enjoyed the wonderful views before the rain swept in. Had tea and a panini and will certainly be recommending others to visit.
Told the volunteers at the entrance that Severndroog had featured on today's DG blog ... smiles all round.

I had no idea - I'm really glad I read this post. Like, I suspect, a lot of people, my only encounter with Severndroog Castle has been as a curio on the first section of the Capital Ring. When, walking that route, I passed it a few years ago, it was boarded up and graffitied. Must go back now to see its rebirth!
After reading this post I decided I must go and see the view from Severndroog castle myself. I finally went today, while walking the first two sections of the Capital Ring, and the view was amazing! Thank you Diamond Geezer for pointing me to it, as I'd probably never have gone (or gone up the tower) without your post
Fantastic views yesterday with no great wait to get to the roof. Very proud, informative and committed volunteers. And excellent service in the busy tea room, helped somewhat by the weather being sunny enough for people to sit outside -it being a bit snug...
