Eight of these are open again today.
Not that any of you'll go. I'm off somewhere else. |
Interesting read, it's amazing how much heritage is out there. I had a similar day at Stony Stratford yesterday and can recommend that as a trip out

Fancy missing out on the boat.

Some of us Essex folk are aware of what is open today in Maldon for Heritage Open days and be visiting them and other Essex gems too time permitting.

I like the use of Beeching as a verb, and will endeavour to use it myself in the future.

What gorgeous weather! Can't wait to see where you went today.

Excellent choice DG. I too visited Maldon yesterday and looked around most of the sites within the town centre. I admire your stamina in tackling the trek out to Beeleigh and back. (I fear my aged limbs wouldn't have coped with that!) A thoroughly enjoyable day out in a very attractive town. Always a pleasure to visit Maldon.

Wonderful, one of my favourite places. My mother lived in Maldon during her childhood and has happy memories. I always enjoy pushing wheelchair-bound Mum along the 'Prom', though, sadly, these days it is no longer possible to get her onto a barge for a cup of tea.

Related news, published the same day, of the the last sea-going steam tug to survive in UK waters.

A St Giles leper colony run by Anglican nuns survived into I think the 1980s in nearby Bicknacre/East Hanningfield, with its own isolated cemetery nearby. An ancient "hospital" sign used to stand in the lane. The expansion of Maldon and Heybridge would probably support a passenger railway now - just think, the Braintree line almost died circa 1970 kept alive by goods trains to Crittalls and a fertiliser depot. |
