The new site loaded fast, and seems easy to navigate.
I also now what weekend know we change the clocks to make the evenings dark early!
The new government site loaded fast and seems easy to navigate.
Even some useful information on the home page, so I now know what weekend we change the clocks to make evenings dark, and the useful hours of daylight less.
Sorry for double post. My first comment did not appear when I checked, so I wrote it again, only to find that the early one had now appeared!
DG - I like your irony A dumbed down website indeed.
It's all a facade. Looks very modern - big writing, friendly font, simple language. But it's hiding the old site, either HMRC or Directgov, which is only a click or two away.
Ah yes, but the Direct Gov info, whilst currently current will slowly be allowed to wither on the vine, in fact I'd advise anyone looking for employment rights information to already be cautious, theyve been killing it softly with their austerity song for a while now.

Sadly short sighted as this is one of those cuts that will cause a myriad of unintended (and expensive) issues down the line.

Take care all.

Had been using the beta version for a little while anyway. DirectGov was very far from perfect. I can remember the much better web service long before that one too.
Someone at work mentioned that at first glance it looks like one of those domain parking pages you get when people squat domains to get adwords money
I notice there doesn't appear to be any reference or link to nhs.uk.

Is this significant?
I think it looks a lot more streamlined and it's certainly easier to find key information on gov.uk than it was on Directgov. However, I get the uncomfortable feeling that they may have left a lot of non-key information out.

I guess I'll get used to the new gov.uk website in due course.
I never liked the Directgov orange, so a big thumbs-up from me. Also prefer the new font. Or am I missing the point here by focusing on web typography?
They have no link to Diamond Geezer, so it's quite useless for ensuring sanity and enlightenment throughout the population.

Oh, of course, they don't want people to be informed do they?
Ah, its the Business Link database that has gone for a Burton. Now there was lots of stuff there that hasn't been carried over.
I don't know what's missing, but do know that it loads quickly, which makes a change.

But why 'passports' should be tucked away on the 'Driving, transport, and travel' page puzzles me. Not all passport holders can drive, or want to.

I've just renewed my passport from Jakarta - via Hong Kong (Hong Kond on the FCO page you eventually get directed to) - and given the complex process, I can only think that this new easy to load site is for cosmetic purposes only.
It's both DG - dumbed down to better suit the needs of the masses and streamlined as it way too much information was displayed and was generally more complicated before

For any cynics looking in, the way this project has been conducted and built is a model for other countries and bit by bit the legacy stuff from other sites such as DirectGov will be switched off.

I'm happy to criticise when criticism is due but here, I think in general, they've done a great job :)

p.s. I don't work there either! :P
