The N16 does a greater stretch of the A5 at night...
Those first two are curiously Australia-shaped, the second earning bonus points because it includes Tasmania.
The 224 used to be even worse because it had a double run within a double run, but TFL decided to re-route it via Whitby Avenue instead. It still does have a ridiculous number of loops and double runs though, 4 iirc and the one at Brent Park still baffles me today.

The 331 map creates a shape which literally looks like a horse, whilst the 376 starts and finishes on the same road but takes ages to get between the termini.

It's interesting that most of these routes are single deckers, although there is another ridiculous example in North London, the 191, which has quite an amusing routeing.

There are probably other routes that have even funnier maps but TFL's website is being as unresponsive as usual...
The 94 and the 155 are pretty straight too.

Ooh, and the 149 of course.

Probably a few more too.
Much closer to home, the D7 should also be a contender in the horseshoe stakes.
How about the R5 and R10?

dg writes: They actually are 'circular' routes, not almost-circulars.
Ah, good old Romans... they've not been around for over 1,500 years, yet their influence is still felt on our transport system (see also the Central line through the middle of town).
I wonder, is there an objective mathematical measure of how straight a line is?
I think it’s linear regression.
Dont forget the 25 and 86 are pretty straight routes too
The 110 is another one. And a couple of years ago, it would probably have been top of the list. It used to run from Twickenham to West Middlesex Hospital but via the existing route then extended to the hospital via the 117 route.
It was changed to the current routing a short time after.

School route 697 does do a near full loop, passing where it starts/finishes on a different road, on its way to/from Ickenham.

You could also walk quicker between the termini of the H26 as well.

dg writes: Nope. Bus 33 mins, walk 36 mins.

The withdrawn route T32 had the termini closer together than the H13.
The 265 is the one that confuses me. Unlike say the 224, Tolworth bound it does a loop but serves the same stop twice. The drivers end up being asked if it's their first or second visit to the Roehampton Lane / Danebury Avenue stop.
It had never occurred to me to consider the Romans as responsible for the Central Line, but I suppose, in a way, they are.
Bus 521 (off peak) 30 minutes, walk (according to Google maps) 28 minutes
@Malcolm - and the Northern Line, at least in south London
A handful of routes share the 265's accolade of serving the same stop twice - the K5 towards Morden serves Kingston Cromwell Road bus station twice and the R5 and R10 each serve the stops on Orpington High Street twice.

Other horseshoe shaped routes include the 46 and N253.
A mathematical measure of the straightness of a curve? Is that the sinuosity - that is, the ratio between the actual length of the curve and the short possible length (usually a straight line)?
Don't forget route 61 is the Almost-Circular bus route. from Bromley North to Chislehurst. But short quick from Bromley town to Chislehurst would be route 162 and 269.
104 from Stratford to Manor Park must be close to a faster termini walk.

dg writes: Bus 6 miles, 52 min. Walk 2.3 miles, 46 min.

In the good old days route S1 was totally circular from Stratford with yellow or black destination blinds defining whether they went clockwise or anticlockwise through Lonsdale Avenue and East Ham.
Probably 325, Prince Regent to Beckton Sainsbury's, provided the rules allow a stroll along the smelly northern outfall sewer bank (modern PR parlance 'Greenway')and not stick to the roads. Sewer bank is subject to Traffic Regulations, so should count. Fingers crossed.

dg writes: That's actually in today's post.
Also, the walk doesn't involve the Greenway.

The 424 has a curious shape like a dog's head.
The 'bus takes between 39 and 69 minutes depending on time of day and day, so might be quicker to walk between termini (or catch a 430).
