Reminds me of the wonderful 'Neverwhere' by Neil Gaiman.

I got mine on Kindle and couldn't put the thing down.Read the pair in two days flat. Already got the third instalment ready on order for direct download when published.

Absolutely loved the first two and will get the third pretty much as soon as it's out.

I take it Ben didn't send you a promo e-mail, then? "Dear (insert name), I really think you'd like to read my new book, and write about it on your blog....."

dg writes: No such email :)

Hmmm, a "slightly parallel London"? See also 'Un Lon Don' by China Mieville (2007)
But hey... you know the books that sell the best: how come no book about rare London cooking recipes?

Thanks for the tip. Will order from Amazon this week.

Darn - was going to comment "this sounds a lot like 'Neverwhere'", but Lewis got there before me :-) Not necessarily a bad thing, as I liked "Neverwhere"...

BTW, the idea of a parallel magical London of which the "normal London" is largely unaware, seems to be a popular concept - I dunno, think of a certain boy wizard whose name rhymes with "Larry Blotter"...

These were my two favourite books from last year - read both in one sitting and have been waiting impatiently for months for Whispers Underground to finally be released.

I bought a copy of "Rivers of London" at Waterstones, Gower Street, on Saturday. I'm half way through reading it now. The assistant in the shop mentioned he had just read the book, that the author once worked at Waterstones and that he would be meeting him on Thursday!

Cheers for the tip DG - got both books from my local library (not in London)- 2 new Ben Aaronovich addicts created.

Another 'Thanks for the Tip' comment DG. I was in Foyles browsing for a book for my Dad's birthday when I spotted 'Rivers' and remembered your post.

I end up surreptitiously reading it at work. I agree with the others who say it is Gaiman-esque. I've never read Neverwhere, but for me reminiscent of American Gods.

I'll be buying the next one soon,
