I do mourn by-election specials. The YouTube channel David Boothroyd has uploaded many of the classics -Wirral West, Christchurch, etc - and it truly is another age. One consequence of BBC News cutbacks is 24-hour news no longer has the ability to cut away to a church hall in suburbia to carry the result, and Newsnight doesn't give a damn.

Here's to you covering it weekly?
I wonder which of the candidates have changed their names to match their cause, and which are nominative determinism.
You've been too soft on Johnson. He deserves way more opprobrium than he's received thus far.
Real issue: would Labour under Starmer be anything more than a weak copy of Blair with no reduction of the increasing gap between rich and poor. Vote Labour because there's no alternative, sadly.
Ed Gemmell describes his party as centre-right. I was surprised too.

dg writes: switched, thanks.
For Conservative 'protection of the green belt' in action, take a look at Conservative Broxbourne Council and the developments they've allowed (and which are being built) in Cheshunt and Hoddesdon on Green Belt land.
Residents in some parts of Camden and North Westminster would consider the local Labour councillors as being insufficiently critical when reviewing large housing development schemes in the district.

Danny Beales came to one early local public meeting about the controversial o2 centre redevelopment to present the council position. This was not well received, and I would say his record could be subject to detailed criticism in the campaign.
Personal opinion: Count Binface is less of a nutter than Laurence Fox or Piers Corbyn.
I doubt if by-elections were ever that important, we'd have breathless accounts about how the result has changed this or that only for the General Election to go as expected.
SDP isn't really left, it's what's known as a syncretic political party--left on economics and right on culture/society (vice versa for other parties). It launched in 1990 as a new version of the SDP after the party had merged with the Liberal Party, forming the Lib Dems.

On a different note, those posters should be printed with clear Conservative branding, and those headlines should not be cut off--these sorts of things should be a legal requirement--and the same for all other parties too.
Strange to think of Harold Wilson ever having the word "charistmatic" attached to him, but I suppose he must have had this quality, once upon a time.
“The pound in your pocket…” still Wilson kept us out of the Vietnam war, his greatest achievement. If I lived there, which I don’t, I would give the SDP a punt.
Not entirely sure the current incarnation of the SDP is 'left-ish' at all - most of their policies are pretty 'right-ish', and have been for some time.
Oh I don’t know, nationalisation of the railways and all public utilities is pretty leftish..
Benjamin. “The pound in your pocket".. or in your purse, as he went on to say.

I have a very old book, written by Paul Foot, berating darlin' Harold for ...being a Liberal! How times have changed.
As a constituent I shall play my part. The danger is that by voting for a minor candidate the anti-Tory vote will be diluted, so Labour is the surest way to depose them. Not impressed with Starmer's policies, but I suspect he is trying to avoid the trap of being trashed by the right-wing press.
No mention by any party that Shapps mandated the ULEZ extension as a condition of the TfL bailout.
In the nearby Hertsmere local council elections, all 3 main parties had protecting the Green Belt as high priorities for them. It's a major issue in the outer London suburbs and home counties.
Not sure about Piers Corbyn being in the "right" category. Probably belongs in the box below. He is very good at getting arrested though.
I would have thought a 90 day suspension was a lesser punishment than resigning his seat, so I can't decide if Boris did it in a fit of pique or has an ulterior motive up his sleeve!
Either way he's got off lightly considering what he did.
World King? More like King Midas in reverse!
A 90 day suspension would have triggered a byelection. If he had stood he ran the risk of losing. By jumping before he was pushed he was able to make it look like he was leaving by choice.
Imagine the hubris of throwing away your seat because a lifetime of lies finally caught up with you, taking your party down with it - and not giving a toss about it, because there’ll always be another sucker to bankroll your selfish existence.
I wonder who he's fooling if he thinks anyone thinks that he's leaving by choice. His supporters still think he was forced to go due to a 'witch hunt' whilst the rest of the sane population knows he didn't want to face the music in which he would be forced to go anyway.
I’m intrigued that “witch hunt” is perceived as negative, but if “wizard” was substituted, it might be thought of differently.
The SDP are pretty right-ish on most issues and their local campaign focuses mostly on right-wing themes
