For those interested in DG's visits to under-used stations, please see the start of his 2018 post about Pilning.
The obvious question is then .. how did you GET there, if there are no local buses either? I cannot imagine you getting a taxi.
There are buses from Stockport to 15/20 minutes walk away from Denton station.
Perhaps Reddish South won those awards, ironically, as it's hardly used. There's a lesser chance of vandalism, so is likely better kept already than many other stations.

And curious to see that Reddish South has just one platform - how many stations in the UK have just one platform for services in both directions?

dg writes: Over 400. See here.
^^Probably many. Ware must be one of the busiest in the above category
Wasn't Denton the fictional town in the 'A Touch of Frost' TV series, with David Jason playing the eponymous police inspector? I wonder if he ever used the railway station there.

dg writes: same name, but fictional Denton was in the Thames Valley.
I expect many people use the 2 stations on Manchester versions of a travelcard, I did. Do the stats try to include those?

dg writes: They try hard. See FAQ.
I used a Northern Trains £10 rover ticket so my visits would not have been registered. About 20 people on my train, none started or ended their journey at either station. Plenty hopped off and back on again.

Interesting that Reddish South gets over twice as many passengers as Denton,. despite having the same non service.

Maybe it's the flowerboxes that attracted the extra 74 people last year! Or events like the one this Saturday.
There's regular attempts and mutterings to get a better service down this line. It's come up again with the Bee Network launching. But they've been trying pretty much ever since it was reduced to its current skeletal form. If they just put the train on a bit later in the day on a Saturday, it would probably be very popular for people heading to the Stalybridge Buffet Bar which is a fantastic old school station buffet bar, and a destination in its own right.

As an aside on the Con Club, this is happening a lot, certainly in the Manchester area. The Conservative Club not far from me renamed itself the Marple Con and Social Club recently. I know at least two who became Con Clubs, and multiple others that have renamed themselves in different ways. But there's a common theme in the ones I have personally seen. They're all Conservative Clubs. The reality is if you're in social club, it's getting harder to get people inside, so broadening out your potential market makes sense.
If they just put the train on later in the day ( or move it back to a Friday which is when it used to run ) then it wouldn’t clash with parkrun either.

There are many parkrun devotees that don’t want to give up their run in order to catch a once-a-week train.
Always amusing to see a reversed BR logo on signs. Often this is the result of the sign being CAD-ically reversed (for the other side of the sign or junction or whatever), but your photo of the other side proves this not to be the case here as they're both reversed!
If you are ever in the area again I can highly recommend a visit to the Portland Basin Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne.
The real downturn in fortunes came when the trans-pennine services transferred from Manchester Victoria to Piccadilly in, I think, 1989.

Up to that point, it was still the easiest way to do that Crewe-Leeds journey without crossing Manchester by bus or on foot (no trams then!).

After the change, you just stayed on the train to Piccadilly with just a same-station connection.

Of course, nowadays some of the trans-pennines have reverted to using Victoria as Piccadilly is effectively full.
When did Geoff Marshall visit them?

Welcome back up north - I hope we can expect more Rochdale news as well from the Gadabout.

I'll put the kettle on if you're passing as well.
Swaffham (Norfolk) Conservative club brands itself as "@theConni" online and on signage. But doesn't seem to have formally changed its name (has both names on the signage)
Denton is also the name of the town where the Rocky Horror Picture Show opens with a wedding scene. I'm pretty sure it's not Manchester though and definitely no trains, sadly.
Actually the church in Reddish is St Elisabeth’s. Elisabeth with a S rather than a Z. Named after the wife of Baron Houldsworh, who developed the area. He never drank alcohol so it is ironic there is a pub in Reddish named after him!
Houldsworth with a T :)

Updated, thanks.
