I enjoyed the piece about the light railway especially the bit that suggests I am 20 years younger than I thought I was ..

When you look at a large scale OS map of the area or fly over, you will notice that the Military Canal has been constructed with a number of dog legs in it. This was to prevent the invading French forces from firing their cannon from barges and scoring a hit along what would have been a straight line.

I understand that Walt Disney was a small gauge railroad hobbyist. He built a ride-on train in his backyard, just for fun... but it turned out to be the inspiration for his idea of creating the original Disneyland.

So the world has hobby railroading to thank for inspiring Disneylands around the globe!

Yet again you are commenting on one of my favourite offbeat places - well you will be tomorrow.

Unfortunately you have caught me in one of my exceptionally pedantic moods. The Denge mirrors were not built before the invention of Radar. Radar was invented, patented and successfully demonstrated by, um, the Germans, in 1904 - a fact which the British delight in not admitting to. There are various knowledgable books on the subject and the Wikipedia entry backs this up.

I only make mistakes to get comments.

It's a boon to see this. I must go back, it's a great day out!

But I must take issue with it being "unlike any other"? I commend to you the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway: http://www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk/

It enabled me to travel from London to Eskdale Green for a Wedding by public transport. What a way to end a day's journeying!

I blogged about it last year here: http://www.randomaniac.co.uk/200...ss-

the railway sounds cool. I'll make sure my brother and ihis wife will be "taking their awestruck 4 year-old son" some time this summer.
