The 'soil' does give it a different feel, I'm curious as to if its a top covering or if the plants are actually growing in it. I'm not sure if its consistent with the water, it jars slightly as you associate that type of soil with good drainage.

Very Mediterranean indeed, also reminds me a bit of Australia. An appropriate time to launch a drought tolerant garden as it has been so dry lately.
