Debating whether to go into work - I walk so transport is not an issue and the worst of the storm will be when I'm there.
I'm watching the winds here.
7:40 The wind-chimes in the garden rattled, a slow ghostly tinkle of what is to come... maybe.
As I once heard a Shetlander describe it, "a fine day for drying, between the showers. Might need an extra peg or two though".
This site is what we use daily and for planning crane lifts in the coming days.
Should I tie the cat down?
This post is one-by-one answering all my questions about the storm.
I'm hearing the dangleway has had to close due to the high winds...
What a superb website, Ian J. Click on "earth" to change the viewing mode: height at 250kP shows the jetstream. A combined physics and geography lesson for home-schooling the boys.
Walked to work - very still and calm and then suddenly a strong gust and then back to being very still
Richmond and Bushy Parks are closed, in case a tree might fall on someone.
All the parks in Waltham Forest are closed as well.. well presumably only the ones they can actually close.
Calling storms Barra and Dudley risks confusion in Britain.
Not as cool as Ian J's link but this Dawlish webcam is always great if you want to combine weather and train nerdery.
NOT MONKEY WORLD!
Local news reoprting that Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn Safari Park are both closed. Most of the animals are not anchored down so there is a danger of being hit by e.g. flying penguins
The world wind map is a joy, but Windy is my brand new go-to for this season of fencewatch. DGs nearest live spot would seem to be a Bow-based venture offering "Urban Predator Fishing."
8:36 - pun alert
Oh dear, now you've got me clicking Refresh every 3 minutes. How am I supposed to concentrate on my work?
Sunshine and blue skies in a very quiet SE1
I do hope the conditions prove sufficiently benign, at least eventually, to permit you to do all the walking today that you would like to do.
All the Royal Parks in London are closed.
BBQ has walked itself across the decking. Moved it to be end-on to the wind, but I really doubt it will make it through the fence anyhow.
In Edinburgh it's supposed to be heavy snow (99%), Right now, it's sunny and not really very windy....
Planes still coming in to land at Heathrow.
I'm enjoying BigJetTV's live feed from Heathrow:
Just looked at the Dawlish webcam... Beautiful sunny day, moderate sea, rail tracks still there... Perfect half-term holiday destination.

Ian J — the wind map in your link above looks like a Van Gogh painting.
wheelie bin took off down the street, I managed to get it back and wedged it close to my front door (it's too big & heavy for me to get into the house on my own). A neighbour's recycling box seems to have gone for good.
Some mad approaches at Heathrow, would not want to be in one of those planes.

Jerry's commentary is great though, "C'mon mate", "Easy son!", "Get in!" etc.
Strong gusts now arrived in SE1 - leaves and small bits of rubbish are floating around 8 floors up
Things equally deserving of an update on the Beeb live thread

1.Cornwall and Devon see 50,000 homes suffer power cuts

2. Some 20 customers have lost power in Richmond-upon-Thames, in SW18 and SW14 postcodes, according to UK Power Networks, which manages electricity cables.
Glad to see a mention of my home neighbourhood on the closed list! A random long roof siding / panel has landed in my garden. Not our roof. Not the neighbour's either. How far did it travel?!
Quite a lot of wind here in SW14 (I’m still powered up by the way). The scaffolding in the house across the road is nearly stripped off its plastic covering, which was firmly in place this morning. I hope it doesn’t hurt anyone when it’s gone for good.
In hyper-local W6 news, here in Hammersmith my barbeque and my neighbours shed both toppled over due to a significantly strong gust. My barbeque looks now worse for the wear, but my neighbour's shed seems to have lost part of one of its side wall.
Wow - thanks for the link to Big Jet TV. Scenes. Over 170,000 watching at some stages, live video stream on Sky TV, interview with Jerry Dyer on BBC Radio 2, someone from Channel 4 News shouting over from the fence asking for an interview...
I live about a mile and half from the field where they are videoing the Heathrow Jets.

Is that the river side of the dome blowing away? Hopefully I can get a good view of it tomorrow morning
Exeter's game with Barrow becomes, I think, the first sporting casualty but all is still calm on the Dawlish webcam.
Strong gusts in SE1 but apart from a few blown over bikes and lots of rubbish now being blown about it doesnt seem too bad. Tesco's deserted at lunchtime - will be plenty of cheap sandwiches available later!
The first Bond Girl was a Eunice too.
14.20 Don't say that...
Today is binday so front garden is like a newspaper library in a tornado, annoying its not my paper recycling
13.30 was stopped in my tracks when walking east over the railway bridge on Richmond rd from Kingsland Rd. not by the force of the wind but by the very loud otherworldly sound of the Aeolian Harp, formed by by an unusual security fence being played by the wind. Was going to try and record on my phone but regretfully didn't bother.
After I thought it was abating there was a sudden gust just before 2pm and my garden fence is now on the ground
Not seen the postman today - things MUST be serious!!
Looks like a street tree came down in a garden a few houses down the road, but by the same token, my neighbours soil filled plant pots are still on their 6 foot wall!
Blustery, but no 'wow' gusts yet.
Wind power not as high as it has been recently so presumably the turbine blades have had to be feathered.
Thanks to link contributors & liked D's Myrtle Avenue. Have lost four fence panels, good test of character how we react in a drama. In good news washed bathroom net curtain and dried it on line in 6 minutes
Meh
Hadn't planned on spending a couple of hours today watching planes land at Heathrow .... thanks for the link!
15.55 (Herts) uncool new look to garden shed, now with felt-less roof. Winds still very strong indeed.
My neighbour is going to regret attaching all those nice new fence panels to the existing upright posts last summer; if he'd checked, he'd have spotted that several of the posts were rotten at the bottom. Fence remains upright, but flapping about like a flag atop a mast.
The big gust that blew my fence down also took two tiles off my neighbours roof which landed in my front garden.

The Dome owners must be hoping it does not rain. Maybe they will consider fitting a more permanent roof now the venue seems profitable.
Am I right in thinking the Dome was only supposed to have planning permission for 5 years?
Well that was no 1987, which is just as well, but there's always got to be some trampoline and wheelie bin action. Maybe it was the leaves in the trees that made the air roar that night. With that in mind I had thought extensively about what I'd do at work and home if there was a lengthy region-wide power cut. 'Be Prepared' and all that.

Acorns wouldn't have lasted long on my balcony. One large, and not particularly top-heavy potted shrub keeled over.

They'd have to have been thinking about replacing the Dome fabric before long. Those sorts of fabric generally have a 25-year structural shelf life.
Here in SE4 at least one street was blocked off by a fallen tree. I passed it while walking home from the supermarket.
09:57 - that made me laugh. Thanks.
The O2 seem still to be taking bookings, Wednesday onwards, for climbing across the roof. Today's punters were advised to reschedule.
Drama in our street. Fire brigade been here for more than two hours dealing with a partially collapsed chimney. Had to get crew up in a cherry picker but do it without bringing down all the phone lines as there's a wooden pole bang in front of the chimney. Impressive pile of rubble on neighbour's roof at one point. Two engines here. Think how many other calls there must have been today and you realise how stretched the LFB must be.
Out here in mid-Essex, our wheelie bin went missing for six hours. Turns out it sought asylum in a neighbour's garden and is now back home and weighed down with bricks just in case it develops another wanderlust.
A colleague showed me a video apparently taken by his friend of a distant airborne wheelie bin. I'm not convinced it was genuine.
I've lost a couple of ridge tiles off my roof. I didn't realise until this morning when I got in from Tesco and spotted the remains lying between my house and my neighbour's. I must admit, my initial thought was 'I hope they're his' as I couldn't see anything wrong with my roof from that angle. But when I ventured to the far end of the garden I saw they have come off the corner of my roof. Oh well, I'll now add 'contact the insurer' to my weekend 'to do' list ...
