I can never think of Margate without think of the Phillips advert witht he rays bouncing off the Isle of Thanet. No? Ah well, you had to be there (and I can't find it on Youtube)

Cant say ive ever been to Margate. Heritage rides sound as though they could be interesting.

Margate... how wrong could I have been?

Aha - based myself there for a couple of days a few years' ago to cover the last slam-door trains in Britain which were running Ramsgate-Dover Priory. Faded glory to be sure.

I can't help but plug the Save Dreamland Campaign http://www.savedreamland.co.uk/ - a very interesting saga of decline, redevelopment proposals and quite exciting plans for the heritage park.

My mouth is already watering prior to our own imminent visit. I like the white box (cube?)superimposed on your Flickr photo entitled "Droit House, temporary home of the Tuner (sic) Contemporary". Is this anythng to do with the late Stockhausen or Philip Glass? Seriously though, Brilliant post as usual,DG. Glad you had some lovely winter sun. Did you know Karl Marx was a big fan of this area
?

Should Chas n Dave's Cockney qualifications be questioned? Chas being born in Edmonton and Dave in Ponders End. I seem to recall that Victor Meldrew went to Dreamland once; this may have been an omen.

Margate ... always reminds me of the Jolly Boys' Outing!

Coincidentally just posted a vintage shot of Margate in my February batch of old postcards.

Margate around 1910

Cheers DG for bringing back the great memories of many a summer spent at Margate and also slight furthur along the coast at Clifftonville where I caught sunstroke.

I spent approximately 10 summers down there when I was a child and enjoyed every year.

Shame about Dreamland as it used to be real good fun, the old rollercoaster was great especially as the onlt brakes on the thing were controlled by a man who rode in the middle of the damn thing.

Does the penny arcade still exist just along the beach front

I was dragged down to Margate a few years back by an ex who wanted to share the magic of his childhood's seaside memories. The outing failed to deliver for both of us.

I was born in Margate, and every time it pops up on the Internet for some reason for another, it reminds me that there are a few reasons that I prefer living in Essex.

Awww I never knew Turner hailed from Margate! You learn a new thing every day

I like Margate. It's a bit run down and frayed at the edges, but that beach is just gorgeous and only 30 seconds walk from the train station - how convenient is that?!

There's a nice cheap hotel (Travel Inn?) right on the beach too. Very convenient for overnigthers.
