Actually, there *is* a second pub - though it's very small, and somewhat out of keeping with the general feel of the place - it's a brewpub, run by the people who own Utobeer, the beer importers in Borough Market (and who have a tiny pub, The Rake, there). It's called Tap East, and it's at the "Stratford International" end of the centre, next to all the middle class pseudo-market stalls (and high quality bread, Lebanese, and Jewish food stores) I think in the lower precinct.

Looks good from a beer point of view, but probably far too small (and expensive) to be satisfactory too. I fear it won't last very long.

But yes, many interesting points here...

I think Tap East's owners are hoping it'll last: they're building a microbrewery, which will no doubt soon be serving ales with sporting themed names. (though obviously nothing that would upset the branding police).

It does seem entirely out of place, and when I visited, not conducive to hanging around: mostly barstools around high tables; loud music from the bar vying with unnecessarily louder music from the concourse outside; and banging from behind the hoarding as they work on finishing the microbrewery. And the pint I had was served warm and flat.

Maybe if it improves, it could have a use as a stop on a really expensive pub crawl - as it's right next to Stratford International, you could hop on the HS1 and go from there to the Euston Tap.

I think there was a few stores having their grand opening yesterday, so that might be why it was so busy.

I'm suprised Wetherspoon's didn't open a more middle-market venue here and nearer the main entrance. Still, the two pubs that are extant make a change from the usual Stratford scene.

I suspect they don't want it to turn into late night drinking spot.
